Site performance
« on: April 16, 2005, 11:22:32 AM »
I've received complaints and recently noticed myself that users of this site sometimes receive timeout errors (ie. "bluestarnet.com could not be reached") something along those lines when trying to access the boards.  I've changed some configuration setting in PHP to try and solve this problem.  Unfortunately I can not test these changes because I never receive errors of this sort while working from the server iteself.  So I ask you to please post any errors or problems you have with the site here.

Thanks

It somethimes can't load for hours for me. But it seems completly at random, so I have no idea what it could be.

What I know is, changing IP helps somethimes. In case you badly need to view or post in here, and you can't connnect. Then changing IP may help. For the rest I only can recommend Mo to make sure that the connections allowed (and other settings) aren't (too) limited.

And maybe use apache instead of IIS. There's a reazon why 69% of the all the web servers use that httpd program. (other words: it's more used than all other web server programs together) The only drawback probably will be, that you can't use the asp.net, you'll have to rewrite pages with that in a other langue. Or run IIS for those pages.

Ok these problems are definitely caused by a bug inside PHP while using it in CGI mode under IIS.  There's lots written up on it though PHP doesn't care to release a fix for it, they seem to blame it on Microsoft.  I am pretty sure a fix is out there...I'll look for it and attempt to fix it..

Here's an interesting tidbit:

Quote
[15 Jul 2002 11:48am CEST] rasmus@php.net

There is really nothing solid to go on here.  Everything points to an
IIS issue, and as mentioned upgrading MDAC seems to fix it, so unless
there is some real evidence that this is something we can fix at the PHP
level, I see no reason for this to be an open bug in the PHP bug
database.

[4 Aug 2002 10:48pm CEST] scott at datalink dot net dot au

Here's a reason to open this bug:   If PHP worked properly with
enterprise products we would consider using it for enterprise
solutions.

How can you state that there is nothing solid to go on, considering the
opening bugnote begins with: "Under the category of 'You Can Never Have
Too Much Information On A Bug'", and this bug has over 600 lines of
descriptive information, including step-by-step procedures and scripts
to reproduce it!

Regardless of who is to blame (IIS, MSSQL, PHP, Solar Flares), the bug
exists anyway, and it is in the interest of PHP to track it.

By closing this bug because somebody claimed that a MDAC upgrade *may*
solve the problem is wrong.   If all bugs were handled using hearsay I
would not feel comfortable about the quality of PHP in general.    How
about having someone who can replicate this bug become responsible for
it, and only when they are happy should the bug be closed.

I am happy to become this person, to help improve the quality of the PHP
codebase and the support team.

In the meantime, please re-open this bug.

Anyone notice the other day when Mo said he could have swore he deleted my old topic... well somehow my posts from one old topic ended up in a more recent yet still old topic, and they were'nt the same topics... really strange.

Also if I edit one of my posts, and then go off LM (close the browser) and come back later.... it goes to the edit post screen and re-edits that post.... strange.

However, I think a caped crusader may be stalking me!

Ugh, the timeout problem is back for both of us. The last 3 days or so I have had to time out at least once in order to post or send PMs. Throbble has barely been able to access the site at all today and I had to time out 3 times to send a PM.
