Ooh!

What you need is NOD32!  I have to say it's one of the best antiviruses ever.  You can check out virus bulletin, but I personnaly have some reasons (probably mentioned outside anwyay)

linK:  http://www.nod32.com

1)  Extremely fast.  The kernel is supposedly written in Assembly, meaning that where scans of a 40 GB drive in Nortan may take hours, NOD32 only takes a matter of minutes.

2)  Virus definitions updating is such a snap; basically you just set up the preliminary steps, then periodically you'll receive a message that your virus definition has been updated.  No manual update necesary.

3)  Very advanced heuristics - surf around for that - the basic point is that it has a very good chance of detecting newly undiscovered viruses.  (Remember the MSBlast worm?  I got rid of that even before it was discovered, let alone make national headlines)

4)  It does what it needs to do - there is no integrated firewall or any other stuff like that.  NOD32 is an antivirus and ONLY an antivirus.

5)  It's definetely no memory hog.

Check it out for yourself if your interested!

I had an annoying virus once, I use norton antivirus and all I had to do was:

start windows in safe mode, full scan (in safe mode I could get to quarantine the virus).
after the full scan I started normally and the virus survived o.O, but after this I was able to delete the folder the virus was in and now I'm clean. yippie

Hrm...didn't know the link was dead :P - it was on last tiem I checked

http://www.nod32.com.au/  Try this one

Access denied...how very odd.

Wtih Nod32 (my experience), it detects the virus and asks for the option to delete the infected file.  I've no idea why your antivirus wants to access the file...you want to delete it :P.

The NOD32 Trial I believe has a time limit - but otherwise fully functional
It's on the website I provided.  (The later link)

Hubba, what I'd do is research that particular virus, and see how destructive it is.  If it isnt' that bad, disable your Sopho antivirus (the messages come from Sopho and not the virus itself right?), get an alternative antivirus, and get rid of the virus that way.

Just reboot in safe mode so it can access the file. (F8 at boot time)

Well, it sounds like either the virus didn't actually exist and Sophos detecting it was an error.

Or it did exist, the file was in use and couldnt be removed, and required you to reboot in safe mode to remove it.

Dude, Just use norton Here, I will do you all a favor:

PhazeDDL

Run a search for norton, You will get em all. I havent not found somthing I was looking for there BUT!! WARNING!!! DO NOT ENTER THE PORN SECTIONS! thats how they make the money to run the place.

They pretty much allways bundle or supply the cracks with the download. Download Norton (2005 is good, 2004 is prolly recomended) install update and than restart in safe mode-Run norton and it will remove the viruses.

I myself have never found a virus that it couldent remove with this method.

And also, If you are happy with sjit you download, Do yourself a favor and buy it..
Treat the software you dld at Phaze as trial ware, Pirates are balzacks.

I would say, "yes" and "yes".

There are utilities there but it is an evil site.

Hubba, ya behind a firewall: Software AND Hardware? i'd recommend ZoneAlarm usually it'll tell ya if something's trying to get (can attest to that)
also, try locating the file itself and try manually deleting it (is going from memory, had a virus like that.....oh ya...i had to reinstall Windows on a clean drive <_< )
