Anyone for Ultima Online?
« on: June 17, 2007, 06:55:22 PM »
Having played Ultima Online many years ago, and bored with the lack of decent free MMORPGs, im thinking of getting back into it.

UOGamers.com run a free UO shard, that generally has between 800 and 1200 players on at any one time.

I find it the most realistic fantasy MMORPG, with a simple magic system, skill based levelling and some really great crafting. Im happy to teach you the ropes if you want to get started

Anyone care to join me there?
I must warn you that UO can be crazily addictive!

Most of them suck - hence my return to UO.
You ever played it?

My main char is now a fisherman - im just saving to buy a boat and search for sunken treasure.
Its by far the most involved mmorpg out there

If you log on im currently in jhelom fishing at the port - im practicing my hide skill so people dont try looting me while im fishing.

Talon could you explain a bit more about Ultima online??

How is the leveling? How are the quests? are they all the same or is there enough diversity?

What professions can you learn?
The game is free2play I assume?
Is there a main storyline to follow like Guildwars?
What kind of classes can you choose??
Are there mounts?
Are there enough different skins of weapons and armor??

Its skill-based not levelbased. There are over 50 skills including begging(!), inscription, blacksmithy, tailoring, fencing, lumberjack, wrestling, magery, etc, etc, etc, of which you can mix and match.

Free to download the client from the official site, and free to play on 3rd party servers. I play on www.uogamers.com - Hybrid. Ive only been playing since yesterday and its a whole lot of fun.

I am not questing myself, as I personally prefer just slaying monsters. The quests are pretty cool from my recollection - including useful items like pet summoningballs, etc.

There is no main storyline per-se - its very non-linear.

There are loads of mounts and pets - including nightmares (dark magical horses) and dragons!!

The weapon and armour variety is exceptional, although there is obviously not the graphic detail of something like guildwars you can still have a very distinctive appearance.

Its just whole lot of fun - come play!

It sounded slightly interesting, especially when reading the level based part. And then the rest of the post made me throw up. Typical MMORPG smell to it... can't help but gag.

Ya I'm in a town but I'm not sure which because I double clicked before reading it and now I'm goin through the controls.

Can I make it full screen? it's windowed now but when I click the fullscreen it just stay as a window and the text is hard to read.

my account name is Meclar and so is my character name

you can drag on the corner of the display to make it bigger
there is also a resolution setting you can change if the text is too small
Ask someone which city you are in

I hit print screen a couple of times while I was in the game but I'm not sure where the pictures are...

Talon I was disconnected and I want to read up on it any how.

Talon was showing me around when we came across a guy getting attacked by a troll.  The guy was asking for help and so we stopped and helped a little with the troll.  We ended up getting a horse and a llama from the guy.

The game has a lot of tasks to do which results in building skills.  When creating a character it is an initial setup but as you play and change your mind on what kind of skills you want or even how you want to make money then the skills change.
So the need to remake a character is non-existent just change the characters life style.
If anything that separates this from some other RPGs I've played is the non-level based characters.
Sure the graphics aren't the greatest.  Newer games are just as limited with appearance as older games, after playing a while you see everyone looks the same and it is based on the game as a whole not individual character.
There's looting stealing randoming all sorts of mischief to be had.

I'm going to make some kind of thief miner-elf (with map reading : P)

They are both the same game and play exactly the same way.
The top version is using the 3d client, which is not supported on the free server.
Its only the graphics that are different.

I wouldnt not play the game because of the graphics - thats not what its about
