I studied molecular genetics in university, and this was one of my key arguments in the debate.
However, there are so many flaws, it still isnt a viable justification. Ergo, they are wrong.

lol! They are coming to a unified oppinion now? I figured this one out AGES ago while starting the fire in our grill. The egg obviously came first because dinosaurs laid eggs before birds even existed! So thus eggs obviously came before chickens, which are birds.  B)

nothing to do with what can lay eggs.

"Therefore the first bird that evolved into what we would call a chicken, probably in prehistoric times, must have first existed as an embryo inside an egg."

this assumes that embryos were first in eggs, as opposed to being a part of the parent which becomes detached.
Simple bacteria exhibit this detachment process, as opposed to egg laying. Assuming all life stems from this primordial cell replication, it would be fair to say the chicken came first.

What came first the chicken or the egg? Evolution, that's how they got there in the first place. Unless you're all religious or something and would rather think it was a god. Then be my guest.

Oh yes there is. The question is "Which came first: the chicken or the egg?" It never says that it has to be a chicken egg in the situation, now if you want to be picky and say that the question is "Which came first: the chicken or the chicken's egg?" Then be my guest, but I'm not gunna care for it! :)

yes, and common sense says that whether the chicken or the egg came first is a scientific question ;) and in science, nothing is implied.

By common sense I meant that it should be common sense that it would be implied. I highly doubt it's start as a scientific question, for we all know what is meant by it, and if it was, then as you say it would not be implied and therefore would have been specified to begin with, and the question as it is, would not be as it is, but would in fact be a different question.

So you imply that in science nothing is implied?

Don't confuse yourself now.

Put simply, the reason is down to the fact that genetic material does not change during an animal's life.

Therefore the first bird that evolved into what we would call a chicken, probably in prehistoric times, must have first existed as an embryo inside an egg.

Assuming that the egg of the first chicken counts (despite Talon's genetics lesson) then of course it's the egg. Only religious fundamentalists are still confused by this issue.

Of course I answered all philosophical questions for myself a long time ago:

What's the sound of one hand clapping? *Claps the fingers of one hand against palm.*

Does a dog have Buddha nature? Yes, next.

If a tree fell... YES, next.

What came first the... EGG, NEXT!

See how easy that is?
