O_O I have a book called C++ for dummies =D I dunno where it is though... prolly downstairs... anyway, I suggest going Visual Basic before C++ it's a hella lot easier, plus both are somewhat similar to scripting in nwn.

It depends what you want your application to do.  Visual Basic is much better suited towards Windows GUI applications which make heavy use of databases.  C++ on the other hand is better suited for engineering and mathematical intensive applications and game design.

Buying a good book is one of the best things you can do. It's a must have when you learn your first programming langue. They often include some usefull software too. C++ isn't easy to start with. But knowledge on C++ will help you a lot with other langues. It also works on many operating systems.

If you want to learn NWScript you could try how I started. I just reversed scripts and changed official scripts to do things I wanted.
If you find a well commented script it will help alot, eventualy I was making them myself and finaly getting into more addvanced scripts than finaly started twining them together into a completely unique script.. Didnt take to long realy
