Yeah, you have to pay for the mods, but you get all three for like $13. Given the new NPC voice sets, portraits, and music, I think it's worth it. Hell, I'd pay $13 for the remastered Witch's Wake alone if it encourages them to finish the story.

I'm trying out Kingmakeer right now, despite my really crappy character build, I'm having a lot of fun.

The quality of the mod is immediatly clear and it stands apart from any user made mod I have played.

What I consider to be the best user-created mods I have played are the Dreamcatcher series, Demon (both made by the same guy) and Bone Kenning (argh when will he finish the sequal?).

I have downloaded all three mods. So far I have played and completed the Kingmaker mod.  I really enjoyed this mod. The voiceovers were good quality and, together with the excellent  cutscenes, helped to make this mod so enjoyable.  If you chose a premade character you quickly lose most of your lvls and equipment, but for once this is handled in a believable way. The only downside is that you then struggle to kill a rat :P. (Why are all bioware's mods set for low level characters?) After the epic confrontations in the HotU campaign,, struggling to kill bands of goblins is not as appealing as it used to be:D

Hopefully bioware will release mods in the future that don't involve goblin bashing and lvl 1-8 characters.

I will now try the Shadowguard and Witch's Wake mods. First impressions are good.
