Reinstalling Windows XP

A couple months back Throbblefoot got a virus/malware or something evil and I had to reinstall her OS. I've done this in the past with older versions of Windows by simply renaming the Windows directory then reinstalling the OS and applications allowing me to preserve the data files (save games, documents, pictures, etc.). Never ran into any problems before.

However, it doesn't seem to have gone as smoothly with the Windows XP reinstall. Some applications return errors when I try to install them now and I can't figure out why. Anyone have any insights on this?

I don't follow what you're trying to do, but whenever I am in a similar situation I have multiple HDD's so I just transfer my shit to one while I reinstall on the other. If you have an external HDD or a second HDD that would work, otherwise, put the shit you want to save on a flash drive or even transfer it over LAN to another computer (make sure you're not transferring infected shit) and then use the XP disc to wipe the HDD completely and then do a completely fresh install. That's how I do it at least, there's a lot of other methods or things you can do/try, but they are a lot less thorough and I am meticulous when it comes to this type of shit, so you might rather prefer a half-assed method. LOL

4th Drive Partitioned (2TB): [677GB]
-J: Acronis Nonstop backup <My Documents, Pictures, Music, Videos>
-K: Arconis Backup <system image; created daily>
-L: DRN-1 <Contacts, Desktop, Favorites, Links, Saved Games, Searches, Windows Resources {Indexing Service, TEMP/TMP}

So in light of that I use a raid storage rack with hot-swappable drives.

Plus, I'd have to go well over the 200GB-before-upload-speed-limited limit. Cheaper to get a safety deposit box and stash HDD in it

I use my parents house as an off-site storage for some of my larger backups.
