What's Happening in Your Neighborhood?
« on: June 05, 2009, 09:11:01 PM »
Shortly before lunch Throbble wondered why all the helicopters were flying overhead.

This happend 4 blocks from our apartment at 11:30 am today:
PG&E looking for cause of Tenderloin blast
Quote
J. Anthony Reed, 47, was watching the movie "Hangover" at the AMC Theater on Van Ness when all the lights went out and the smell of burning rubber filled the theater.
That's a multi-story movie theater that Throbble, Cuchulann and I regularly meet at to see movies together.

It's 6:00 pm now and the helicopters are still buzzing.

Post here about anything interesting that's happening in your neighborhood.

My neighbor put up a new mailbox post.  That's the extent of it around here.  We don't judge distances by "blocks".

Well here's a scary incident. 420 has said that commuter cycling in SF is an extreme sport. Its even more true when your ride is a rolling time bomb. Last week I discovered that the reason for the irregular rubbing of my rear brakes was due to the rim being cracked. So i got a new rim and after changing out the gears, i cleaned up the odl rim to see just how bad it was. When i peeled back the liner on the inside I saw just how bad it really was. Not just cracked but complety splitting apart on the inside. This thing could have exploded at any moment. I've heard about bike rims exploding before but never have i been so close to getting first hand expierence to such an event.

I know you're bike parts are quality so that goes to show how important that is. Lesser rims probably couldn't have handled that sort of wear.

Cool pics too.

Helicopters woke Throbble and I up this morning (yes, it was 11am but we were at a wedding last night):
Smoke pours from Market Street manhole

Now, we just heard (5:20pm) a big explosion coming from the direction of Van Ness. I'll post any news about it if I see it.

This morning while riding near that intersection (around 8:45) I thought of the earlier explosion from last month and had an image in my head of dodging exploding manholes. Kinda like the old Paperboy Nintendo game. Guess it's time to ride wearing a flak jacket and asbestos pants from now on. Seriously though my psychic radar has been getting hits all weekend. Weird, Think ill buy that sledgehammer too and have it sanctified.

People have fallen in during the winter but I've never heard of anyone drowning during the summer.  I Walk around this lake several times a week:

3.5 but I'm sure it was caused by something else....Thanks a lot 420 I wanted Meclar to feel bad !

I didn't know you live in NH.  I drive through there everytime I go to Maine or Boston.  I like the White Mountains very nice.  Better than the Green Mountains next door.

I was going to make a comment about how I couldn't get the first link to load at all, but decided to be lazy. Now that you've used the guilt trip card about the second link, I feel more inclined to rub it in with bitching about the first link. :)

Meclar, your links suck ass. lrn2google.

White Mountains are easy to like.  Greens are far superior!
That is why I like NH ocean, mountains, city without any of it in my back yard.

I was wondering what was happening with the Muni earlier today. They were only running Castro street shuttles and turning the trains around there. Seems a pair of them bumped near the exit from the undergound. At the speed which those cars run around there It couldnt have possibly been worse than the Metro crash in DC eariler.

Gee.  Even New Hampshire has more exciting neighborhood than mine!  We had a pretty crazy electrical storm here a couple days ago.  I thought I was gonna be struck by lightning running to my car.

That's what happens when you go up against one of our vintage street cars. Throbble and I were in a cab on Market a few years back when we passed a street car that had obliterated a minivan that tried to cut it off. Unfortunately the way the cabbie decided to pass was by driving into oncoming traffic.

Check out the article about the crash on SF Gate.

Quote
At the height of Monday's evening commute, a historic F-line streetcar rear-ended an SUV, pushing it into the back of another F-line streetcar stopped for traffic. Witnesses said the driver of the first streetcar, Lonny Butler, was distracted.

Those things are menaces to society!
The streetcar, the minivan or the cab? Whichever, I agree.

They just passed a law banning cell phone use which I thought was covered under a previous law that prohibited doing anything with your hands other than driving.
But since that subway accident in, I think DC and there's been some in the Boston area, the local news is all over stuff like this.  That was a good picture.

We already have that law here.  You need to use some sort of hands free.  However I still see many people on their phones while driving.  Even I'm guilty some times.  I don't like the hands free device that I got.

That's shit.

If you're talking on the phone while driving and fuck up because you're on the phone, it's not because you're holding the phone, it's because you're giving the conversation some of your concentration and focus that should be reserved for driving. Anybody who fucks up because they ARE holding a phone, should never take their hands off the wheel. They probably shouldn't even be driving.

No offense to one-handed individuals. This statement wasn't meant for you.

California passed a no hand held cell while driving law. Everyone ignores it, I've seen cops driving their squad car while chatting on their cell phone. Of course, that's San Francisco cops and they would just as soon shoot you as look at you.

This year we passed another law, no texting while driving... because people are just that fucking stupid.

I figure it will be like drunk driving, in Monterey no one thinks twice about drunk driving. We were down a couple weekends ago and a restaurant offered to put Throbble's Bloody Mary into a to-go cup.

I think it's Louisiana which has the open container law. You can get a bloody mary at a drive thru.

We have state run liquor stores and beer is sold from like 6:30 to 11:30 in NH but I've gone down south and used the drive-thru liquor stores.
