In the beginning of recorded time, there were two major professions of Honor in the world. These were Monk, and Wizard. Monks, being of Lawful disposition, had ordered themselves into three ancient Orders, which were represented by colors and according to their morals. There was the Eternal Order of the Sun, also known as EOS, which was represented by yellow, and sometimes white; there was the Eternal Order of the Night, or EON, which was represented by black, but sometimes also deep blue or dark purple. And in between the paths of good and Evil, there was the Eternal Order of Twilight, or EOT, which was represented sometimes by red and sometimes by gray.
The mages were less organized. Because the Art of Magic was young, there were as yet no formal school of magic, and there was no association of wizards by beliefs and morals. However, mages were beginning to show their usefulness and power, just as monks had done for as long as anyone could remember.
In this time, monks were the dominant protectors and power brokers of the world, with the EOS being the primary protectors and defenders, and the EON being the primary reason there was a need for the EOS. The EOT sought to keep balance between these two groups, and thus bring harmony to the world.
It was known for time immemorial that there would always be tension between the EOS and the EON, and that EOT would keep them from destroying one another. But one day, the Grand Master passed on, and the Time of Choosing was brought to bear amongst the three Eternal Orders once again. Each time a Grand Master passed on, each Order would have a contest to see who would be given the honor of competing to become the next Grand Master. Once each Order had a candidate, the Orders met in a secret location deep in the Desert of Wandering Souls to compete for the position of Grand Master.
In the EOS, the combat within the order for the right to compete for the position of Grand Master was always â??to the painâ?ÂÂ, meaning death had to be avoided at all reasonable costs. In the EOT, the contestants had to decide whether to fight to the pain or to the death each time they paired off. In the EON, the fighting was always to the death. For this reason, the EON tended to have fewer high ranking members.
However, combat for the position of Grand Master was always to the death amongst the three finalists, since holding the position was so important for the Order to whom the honor went. The last Grand Master had been of the Eternal Order of Twilight, but his successor was to be the candidate from the EON. When the dust settled, the yellow robed candidate and the red robed candidate lay dead. Only a black robed figure still stood.
This man's name is unrecorded, but it is known that he bore an unusual gift for a monk: he was brilliantly intelligent. This allowed him to excel where others in his order had failed, because he had other ways of approaching problems than others did. And when he became Grand Master, he set his goals for the EON in motion.
Instead of attacking the EOS, as had always been done in the past, he sent some of his best and most loyal followers to frame an entire town. They were to anger an adult dragon and make it appear that the town was responsible for the doing. At the same time, he sent an initiate to the EOS under the guise of being a poor boy from that town, with the news that there was a dragon attack imminent and the town needed protection. This was to distract the EOS while the real objective was accomplished.
The real objective was to destroy the ever meddling EOT. With them out of the way, the EOS would be facing not only an angry dragon, but the wrath of the EON at the same time. And so the EON employed a spy to bring about a division within the ranks of the EOT, and when they had begun to fight amongst themselves, the EON attacked so swiftly and in such a well planned and unexpected manner, disguising themselves in the colors of the EOT, that the EOT was wiped out except for a few initiates who swore their allegiance to the EON.
