Defective Penny
« on: April 16, 2005, 01:44:37 AM »
I found a defective penny today, the heads side is missing, it's not that it's worn out, it's just not there, it's like half of a penny, and the heads side is silver, could this be worth anything :P?

Maybe it's fake.

Well, I doubt it's "defective", no coin would leave the mint in that condition. It could be a counterfit or some kind of joke or gag item (compare the back with other pennies under a magnifying glass).

The most simple explaination is the one Mel gave, it sounds to me like someone was having fun with the machine tools in shop class.

The only reference I found to "clipped pennies" (pennies that have their copper scraped off) is from an article about the American Civil War.

Quote
French and local lawyer David Roer repeatedly warned the Republican faithful to be on watch for the dreaded "copperheads" -- those Democrats and anti-war advocates who took to wearing a clipped penny on their lapels as a mark of their political belief.

Ooo, I also remember having a magic trick as a kid that involved a fake penny that was made of a different metal that was affected by magnets. See if a magnet attracts it, if so, it's not a real penny.

I don't know, I once had a counterfeit dime.  I swear, it was a shitty job too. the D was on the back rather than front....

It could be a magic trick like 420 said. I had one where you put the penny in  circular thing and bash it on the table and it would split in half.
