OK, so I finally figured out what this deal with this game is. This is the game that I thought Guild Wars was going to be. Basically Diablo 3.

It's made by the creators of Diablo and some people that worked on Diablo 2. It takes place in the near future of an alternate timeline in which demons have taken over the world and you are trying to liberate London.

Apparently the game design is very much like Diablo, you can solo through the game or go online (for free) and play through with other people. The creature difficulty, item drops and experience increases with each person in your party. There are different classes (6?) and you gain levels, assign attribute and skill points just like in Diablo.

E3 Designer Interview

This game looks like it will FUCKING ROCK! Throbblefoot and I plan to buy 2 copies as soon as it comes out and play through multiplayer.

I'm not impressed. I would have to see actual gameplay to even look at it again.

According to the interview there are now 6 classes, apparently there are multiple kinds of templars and cabalists.

OK, so here is the breakdown of the classes as I understand them. There are 3 factions, Cabalist, Templar and Hunter and each one has 2 classes.

Cabalist Classes
Evoker - Nuker Caster
Summoner - Summons Elementals and Demons

Templar Classes
Blademaster - Offensive Sword Tank (Can dual-wield)
Guardian - Defensive Sword Tank

Hunter Classes
Marksman - Offensive Gunner
Engineer - Creates Specialized Bots

Check out details on all 6 classes here: Hellgate: London Classes

From the description of the Marksman class:
Quote
The Marksman's arsenal stretches as wide as the broadest plain. Two-handed heavy assault rifles, one-handed machine pistols, myriad rocket launchers, fire blasting pistols...but that's just the start! Don't forget the electricity lasers, poison spewing hoses, flamethrowers, and-just for kicks-we'll throw in two pieces of weaponry that put the boring old chainsaw to shame: One is a handy melee cutter and the other launches circular-saw blades at high velocity. That's not everything, but the Internet's only so big.

Looks interesting. Problem is that games get an automatic few points taken off my initial reaction if it's third person view in such a FPSish looking game.

As great as this game sounds, it doesn't look that great. At least, the gameplay doesn't.

From IGN Hellgate: London Preview:
Quote
The testing is going well and, with all the content securely in place, now it's all about fixing small bugs and polishing the whole experience until it shines with a healthy, hellishy red glow. To help polish the game, Flagship worked with EA's Quality Assurance teams to create a new software tool called the Evil Eye. This new program allows the developers to cull basically every single bit of data they could want about the game.

In one case, the team was getting feedback from players that the Swordmaster "sucked." Digging a little deeper, the Evil Eye data revealed that the class fell behind the power curve at level ten. It turns out that nearly every single Swordmaster player choose the Dual Wield ability once it became available at tenth level but the ability wasn't quite offering up the same damage out vs. damage in ratio that some of the other classes were getting at the same character level.

The Evil Eye information allowed the developers to make some intelligent choices about how to solve the problem. Rather than just tweaking it through trial and error, the developers can see exactly where the imbalance is and address it directly. In the case of the Swordsman, that meant adding the Dual Wield ability as a default ability for the class and slightly increasing the effectiveness of swords across the board.

Though it was originally built for the beta, Flagship plans to use Evil Eye to continue balancing the game once it ships. (EA is also currently encouraging other developers to incorporate Evil Eye into their own development processes.) Given all the extra content that the team has in mind for after the game's release (new classes, new weapons, new events), this balancing feature will definitely come in handy.
As physics and calculus teaches: More information always means more accuracy.

Seems theyre going to release it like Dungeon Runners 1/4 of the game going to be free to play and if you want the rest (more classes, more stuff, more stack capacity and more things) youll have to pay the monthly fee, i dont mind the fee, but i bet all the kids that cant pay the fee, or the persons that just dont want to, gonna start saying the game suck and complain about it... would be better to just give 10 day trial with full access and then only p2p.

Chard!

Hellgate Resistance put up an overview of the character creation process in Hellgate: London.
Quote
Customization Options:

Gender: Male or Female. The only bonus for creating a female avatar is more whispers and group invites.

Face: The included faces represent a variety of ethnic groups to give a distinct look.

Hair Style: From the standard Caesar cut to a flamboyant Mohawk, your avatar can take on a variety of cuts until that big metal helm comes down and crushes it flat.

Facial Hair (Male) / Accessories (Female): Controls beards for male characters and facial piercing for females.

Skin Color: Selectable from a color palate that runs from deathly white to pitch black.

Hair Color: Also selectable from a color palate, includes the standard brown, blonde, black and red, with a few crazy colors like turquoise.

Height: Slider adjusts your character's height.

Bulk: Slider adjusts your character's bulk. Bulk is added as muscle, not fat. There are no flabby soldiers in The Resistance!
Here is a pic showing the difference in size characters can be:

I've read a good number of the links posted here and I cant find an answer to the most important question: Is there any PvP?

Also, it sounds like the game wont be too incredibly long of a single player game and the multilayer will just be basically questing and vanquishing areas. It might have replayability but how will this keep me interested for the longterm?

Yes there is PvP. Subscribers get to access special PvP arenas but you can also just go out of town like in Diablo 2.

I never played Diablo  :o  When I admit that to people it seems to induce shock and awe.

So it is a persistant world (WoW, FFXII) where I can follow someone out of town and kill them immediatly along with being able to kill anyone that I meet while running around an area?

Not really, if you are by yourself you get a private instance of the combat areas, like Guild Wars. I suspect that you'll have to party up with people, enter a combat area then go hostile on one another.

This is only a guess since I need to upgrade Throbble to Windows XP so we can test out multiplayer together.
