Computer stuff / Damage Level: Significant
« on: June 28, 2009, 10:28:41 AM »
When I came home from Florida I noticed a room mate had been using my computer tower as an ironing board stand and I quickly noticed that the little door to the USB ports had been broken off.  Yesterday I moved my setup to another room and after everything was plugged in and powered on, there was no video after the Windows load screen.
Clips on the fan have broken off, also clips on the plastic heat sink stand are in pieces and a cap blew on the video card.  Aside from this damage there was a massive amount of dust on the heat sink.  I'm pretty sure I can get a cap and fix the card at work but the other pieces I don't know.  So long as it's on its side the computer runs fine with the on board video.
I've reverted to my older computer while I decide to buy a laptop.

General Gaming / Diablo 3 vs. Guild Wars 2
« on: April 04, 2009, 02:05:56 PM »
What's coming first?  Since I found out there's a teleport spell I want D3 screw flying.  Was there a teleport spell in D2?  Let's make this a poll where are the options to do that?

General Gaming / Team Fortress Classic
« on: March 21, 2009, 11:26:57 PM »
Anybody play the original?  I saw the new one on PS3 and I do not like the new look.  Too cartoony and bright and clean.  I also saw Fortress Forever and I think that's more true to the look of TFC but the maps are far more detailed.  I can't run FF because you need to have purchased a newer Valve game with some SDK game source or something so I've playing the original here and there.  Surprisingly some of the old servers are still up like SMK and Dirty Harry's.

What does it take to set up a forum like this?  I still have this Dell mail server kicking around and I'd like to use it for a forum/message board. What would I need as far as equipment and software and what does it cost monthly or weekly?  Just to tie me over I went to Free Forums and made an account there.  Would I be better off paying someone to run it?

Since I've dropped out of online gaming I've hiked 1600 miles of the Appalachian Trail and recently began volunteering at the local Audubon Center and Cooperative Extension program offered by the state university.  We're seriously lacking communication because it's all volunteer based people are on all different kinds of schedules and not everyone is from the same region so having a forum to post updates would be a great improvement.  Unfortunately they do not want a privately run website and the university requires the program to have a website through them. However no one said I couldn't do a forum.

Computer stuff / door stop
« on: February 29, 2008, 09:23:13 PM »
So I have this Dell Pentium III 866 512 server I'm using as a door stop because I don't know what to do with it.  Any ideas?
What do these things sell for?

This company left a few thousand dollars worth of equipment behind. http://www.transdecisions.com/

Computer stuff / Product review
« on: September 07, 2007, 09:41:31 AM »
I've had the same mouse for about 5 years it's a Microsoft wired 3 button optical mouse 1.1 usb/ps2.  Link
When I play TFC the scroll slips and will change weapons on me.
I have to randomly click things twice with the left mouse button.
Dirt and lint collect on the bottom pads.
I like the mouse because it's lightweight and basic.

Link to the Product
Impulsively I bought a Logitech wireless 10 button laser mouse 2.4 usb (!) ps2.
What I like is the IM notification because I don't use sound for my IMs and the IM notifications don't make it passed the gaming window.
It's wireless,  I don't have to have my penny jar holding up my mouse cord.
There's a mute button.
A side scroll for wide web pages.
This thing has a serious response time.

What sucks is that I don't give a crap about email notifications.
Most of the functions don't work in my games.
I can't set Alt+Tab as a command or the Windows key.
With 2 AA batteries in it, it's heavy.
Playing games I noticed that if I stopped moving the mouse and then moved it again the cursor took a few seconds to wake up.
I've lost signal to the receiver.
The volume control on the mouse doesn't work with my speakers, it has its own volume so I can't really turn up the sound, only down or mute.

I want a really good wireless mouse for gaming and internet browsing.  Does one exist?
I'm looking at Razer wired mouses.  Link

It's basically as Homer said in the first minute why are you watching something you can get for free.  There were some good Simpson moments but I should have waited to rent it.
I think they killed off the doctor.

Guild Wars General / GW Update
« on: July 27, 2007, 09:38:18 AM »
Since the last GW update the NPC intelligence has gotten a little better.  I notice that while having henchmen and attacking a target and then targeting another monster if that first target is low in hit points the henchmen will continue to attack while you can move on to another target (I think that's how it works).
Also in some missions and quests where you have to protect an NPC they seem to have made them tougher and fixed the suicide NPC problem.
I really hated when monsters targeted only Alesia and killed her in 2 seconds.  That doesn't happen any more.
When I have Thom henchmen in my party and I'm jumping around cities near Kryta he leaves the party even though he should stay.

So since I'm unemployed I made a lvl 18 R/MO in two days.  Rangers do some serious damage.  Ignite arrow with dual shot!

Feedback & Community / Avatars
« on: June 13, 2007, 03:18:43 PM »
I can't seem to change my avatar.  When I select "Browse" and pick a file then click "Update Avatar" it reverts back to the avatar I'm trying to change.  I have plenty of room in my attachment manager 3mb of 48mb.  I've made sure I meet all the other requirements too like pixel size and file size.

Computer stuff / New Computer
« on: April 14, 2007, 03:27:59 PM »
Here it is:

MSI K9N6GM motherboard

2gb DDR2 533 memory

AMD Athlon 64 4200

GeForce 7600 GT

The sound is on board Realtek,  which is really great.

Motherboard/processor came in a barebone package which included tower, 450w power supply and a fan for $280.
2 sticks of memory, bought on ebay, for $100
Video card $180

One thing I over looked was the newer SATA connection for drives.  In my old system I had 4 drives that ran off IDE. The new motherbaord only supports 2 IDE devices (one connector on the board).  So it's not an all in one system as my old one was but eventually I'll upgrade to SATA.

I never thought I'd have a fan attached to my video card...or even have 2gb memory. All I need is a monitor and a mouse and my old one is up and running.

Guild Wars General / New to GW
« on: April 11, 2007, 11:20:15 PM »
Wiki has a great section for GW and maps.
I'm pretty sure I had a Stone of Recall item that brought me back to Ascalon City but I got it with another character and deleted it.  Can I get it again?

Do I need real people to do some of this stuff like open the gate?
It bugs me when missions that I've done or quests don't change the landscape...why do I still get attacked by the same Longspear guy after killing him 100+ times and those stupid lvl 0 wigglie worms?
It's funny to see my character pick up a honeycomb and run with it...can't wait to see him with a treasure chest.
I CAN"T DUMP MY CRAP IN TOWN??
I keep ruining items with this salvage kit business just to see what will break down.
I like the Healing Signet.  No potions no worries just spam that guy...
Why do they make you have a first and last name?

Say in Pre-Searing Ascalon I liked the mesmer class best for my second prof. and I choose that class AFTER trying the others will I get those specific spells I had when I tried it the very first time?

Is there anyway to remove the look of cloaks with leto or ANYTHING.
My henchwomen put way to much starch in that !@#$. !@#$ is like cardboard all not bendable.

I've been diagnosed with "infectious mononucleosis" so I'm home for another week.  If anyone wants some 20 duels I'll be in and out.  Be patient it takes some time to get from my recliner to my chair.

GodSpire General / Godspire style
« on: March 09, 2006, 07:31:06 PM »
Since I've seen people on GodSpire and it being back up this topic has come up several times.  I would like to see GodSpire back to the look when there was that greenish fog in the air....ah ok after that when it was clear seeing but the one Hall and two healing lights was a far more comfortable size even though mage duels were a pain.

Even still I'm so happy GodSpire is back I thought I'd have to wait for NWN2 to see some of the people from GodSpire.  Can't wait to all the regulars there.

Marine killed in car accident on base
Matthew Odell, 19, died following a collision with a car driven by another Camp Pendleton (in California) marine.

By JENNIFER MUIR
The Orange County Register

A Camp Pendleton Marine was killed Thursday morning in a two-car accident at the base.

The Marine was identified as Matthew Odell, 19, who lives at the base but whose next-of-kin is from Newport, N.H., the Orange County Coroner's Office reported.

Odell was taken to Mission Hospital in Mission Viejo after the collision, where he died at 8:10 a.m. The accident occurred while Odell and another Marine were driving their personal cars on the base, Lt. Nathan Braden said.

Other details were not released because the accident is under investigation, Braden said.

Sorry to bring down the tone of the ranting thread..

Matthew's grandmother is my dad's unofficial mother.  His father and mine were friends in their younger years. I remember when his father died in a car crash when Matthew was twelve and I played with him at his house because he didn't want to go to the funeral services.
The funeral's on Monday other services are on Sunday in southern New Hampshire.
