Random Ranting / HMH Shoots Razor Blade With A Nailgun

Quote
Yes but you made a presumption like someone says that book looks boring, that guy looks gay, those clothes look nice, etc...

That's an opinion, not a presumption. While his opinion may have been a judgement, it is nonetheless an opinion. Everyone makes judgements. The way he stated his opinion was not to say that he thought Neji is gay because he "looks" gay. This is because gay was used as to say something was stupid/lame/crappy.

The way his words were stated could mean that he meant Neji looks like he is gay because of the way he looks. That would be a presumption based on the way he looks. However, it all depends on how Tyrael was using the word "gay" to describe Neji's appearance. In my opinion, the most accurate assumption would be to take it as stupid/lame/crappy/etc. rather than homosexual.

Now, besides this obvious point. He technically used the term "ghey" which is slang for "gay" but is almost exclusively used to describe things that are lame/stupid/crappy what have you.

Ghey:

 1. (internet, slang, pejorative) An alternate spelling of gay meaning ineffectual, unsatisfying, unfulfilling, stupid, untalented, and so on. Equivalent to the slang meaning of lame.

Usage notes

The spelling is typically used to differentiate the meaning of "lame" from the homophonic meanings of "homosexual" or "happy," so as to retain the pejorative meaning, without the "happy or joyful" misinterpretation.

 It's quickly becoming the forum with the most "juice" on here. It's catching up to NWN General. Bleahehehehe!

Dammit, if I had a dollar for every post I've ever made! You can see I'd make a decent amount of money from my post count here, but it would be alot more including RR posts. And then all the other forums I've gone too and posted a decent amount. Especially RoD. I have 13,510 posts there at the moment. :D

I have no fucking idea why I created this topic.

Feedback & Community / Using Quotes
« on: June 08, 2007, 09:23:59 PM »
The following information is on how to use the quote feature and some neat tricks to using it. Just because you know how to make a quote, don't disregard this post just yet. You may very likely find information in here you didn't know, that might be useful to you.

How do you make a quote? Simple.

Code: [Select]
You can type
The message in the quote goes here.
and you have successfully made a quote.
The box I just made above was not a quote, that was code. That allows you to put in different types of code without any of them being executed. I put how to use a quote in code so the quote would not be executed and appear as a quote so I could present you with the proper example.

When you make a quote you have the ability to put in a message or whatever else you like in the "headline" (that's just what we'll call it) of the quote. It automatically does this when you use the reply button to a specific post. (Not when "adding reply" to the topic, but a specific post.) You may also have the multiquote addition feature (located at the bottom of that post next to the reply button) turned on when replying to posts. However, when you make your own quote, you just put in an = and then whatever you want the headline to say following it. For example:

Quote from: Tyler Durden in Fight Club
Yeah, with enough soap we can blow up just about anything.
Notice I had added "Quote from: Tyler Durden in Fight Club" as the headline. So I put in:

Code: [Select]
Yeah, with enough soap we can blow up just about anything.
However, when you reply directly to someone's post (the quote of that person's post will appear in the place where you type your message with the quote code and post already inserted for you.) it automatically fills in information for you in that headline, such as the poster of the quote, and the date & time of the quote. It also adds a some other code which will basically turn the headline into a link that links to the post it was quoted from. But it looks something like this when it's used:

Quote Message Here.
That link in the headline will just lead you to this topic, as I am using my own post here as the information for that quote. (except the actual text)

To actually make it a link is a little more complicated, without clicking "quote" on someone's post. You also have to use "author=" to define the author if you make the headline into a title. You can use "date=" to define the date. For defining the link, simply use "link=" To link a specific post use "topic=" directly following "link=" with no space. To retrieve the link to a post, find the post and click the little paper icon next to the post title. It will refresh send you to that post in that topic (seemingly refreshing your page), but the link in the address bar will display the direct link to the post. Simply copy all the information after "topic," The address for this post should look like "2781.msg35814.html#msg35814" As an example, the above quote headline looks like this in the editor:
Code: [Select]
Quote Message Here.
When you quote someone, everything in that quote is a part of your post. So basically whatever it adds into your post is just like the rest of your post, which is something you typed in there, even though you didn't actually type it in. When it adds the time of the post, it adds the time the post was posted by the time the board is set to believe is your own time (going by your settings). Since it's part of your message it won't appear as the correct time to anyone viewing your post unless they are in the same timezone as you. Assuming you have it set to correspond with your time.

For instance, you can post a message like: "Right now it is 3:46 PM." That time is not going to change for each viewer even though it may be a different time where they are, obviously. So in your post it still shows 3:46 to them, even if it was really 4:46 PM for them. It works the same way with quotes. So if you ever want to know the time a message from a post was quoted by someone in a different timezone, you either have to know what timezone they are in to figure out the time of the quote or find the post the quote was from and check yourself when the post was made. If the quotes headline is a link, it should lead you to the post being quoted for you. The time above each post goes by your own time settings. The settings can be found under "Board Settings" in your control panel. You may want to do that if you haven't done so already. Also, make sure the daylight savings time box is correctly checked or unchecked. If it's an hour off, that could be the reason.

As for multi-quote, I don't believe SMF supports it.

This information is really simple stuff that many board users will know. But for new users or users who may not understand quotes very well, that can be a useful bit of info.

I updated this topic, as it was about using quotes in IPB when this board was IPB. Now it's for SMF. Hopefully I covered most everything, as the differences in advanced quoting were large.

Discussion / War in Iraq AND North Korea
« on: June 07, 2007, 08:45:24 PM »
Say what you want to say about either? I've made a topic about the war elsewhere and thoroughly discussed it, so it's hard for me to repeat myself unless I'm telling you how much Bush is a piece of shit.

That, and I think if we should be liberating any goddamn country it should be North Korea. Do you know what they do to those people there? They are forced to worship the leaders like gods, and the government doesn't allow anyone in the country. Well, very few people anyway. They are extremely out-dated on what's going on in the world and the people own damn near no personal freedom or privacy. Is this war against Terrorism really doing anything? Except lowering our population by killing off all of our troops. As for North Korea, yeah... we'll just ignore them until they get their hands on nuclear weapons... and they really, really, don't like us.

I agree, in most situations.

Quote
And elessar that depends on the people likings me and chard have had fun on it, were both lvl 15 (unless he have lvled more tongue.gif). whats the problem with it? you wanna kill a monster and boom! lvl 50? or what?, the mage sure kills faster at lower lvls but once youre like lvl 7 or so mages start to die easy (like in almost every game) but they still do lots of dmg. At highter lvls its funnier for the hunt of items and the monsters killing.
the skills arent that expensive cos you gets lots of money as you lvl, so a barely lvl 4 cant judge a game for the others, maybe just for yourself.
When I read that post Tyrael, the voice in my head while reading the words sounded like a stupid half-orc barbarian from NWN with an intelligence of 8 points or less. "Me go to forest smash thing there. Hur hur hur!"

Discussion / The Occupation Thread
« on: May 16, 2007, 07:12:36 PM »
Ladies and Gentlemen, HMH brings you the Occupation Thread!

I think the purpose of this thread is self-explanatory and completely obvious. However, if you still don't know, then the idea behind it is to share and possibly discuss your occupation (career/job/work, whatever you do to make a living).

You may see this as a pointless thread, but alot of threads I make are pointless, and I act oblivious to that point.

Anyway, I'm a cook, more or less. I work at a fast-food restaurant franchise known as Dairy Queen, and it's not a bad job at all, better than hauling trash or trudging around carrying boxes, or shoveling shit. Most employees learn how to do everything there is to do to keep the place running, apart from a manager's duties. I've started out as purely the cook, meaning I don't do anything with registers, customers, or icecream yet. The cooking can be the more difficult half when there are alot of food orders around lunchtime and the place is booming, while the front is taking orders, those in the kitchen are running around trying to get them out in time, as fast and fresh as possible, as well as getting the order correct. There can be alot of confusion sometimes. Beyond that are the chores, keeping things stocked, mopping, sweeping, cleaning out the grease, dishes, and quite a few others. Overall the job is relatively easy, but it's also not very high pay, which is expected. It's better than my parents jobs! Even if they get paid more... factory work... uck.

Beyond that, I thought I had three bosses, but I now know I have four. =D

Random Ranting / HeLL's Absence
« on: April 22, 2007, 10:17:58 PM »
I shall be gone for awhile, unsure of how long. It could be as short as a few days, or as long as a month or so. I have something I need to do. I call it an absence, because I will not be on the computer at all until I have accomplished my task. Until then, it is highly unlikely I will be seen, unless something comes up... which would have to be pretty major.

Anyway, this is goodbye, for awhile. But don't cheer yet, I will return! Bwahahahahahaaaaa!!!

Alright, this thread can be used to post some conversations you've had with people that you think are humorous.

Warning: Do not read this post any further if you are easily offended or are not confident that you can handle viewing obscene material containing sexual references and terms. ...not kidding.

This first one is from last year or so, when this girl was trying to cyber with me... ahahaha.

Jessica (12/8/2006 3:13:56 AM): pretty good
Jessica (12/8/2006 3:13:57 AM): you?

HeLLMasteRHeLL (12/8/2006 3:16:24 AM): Probably through music? Rap?
Jessica (12/8/2006 3:16:30 AM): probably
HeLLMasteRHeLL (12/8/2006 3:17:41 AM): I have a good memory, but there are some things I usually think will have little importance or purpose in remembering, and my old yahoo contacts, before I ditched yahoo, were in that category.
HeLLMasteRHeLL (12/8/2006 3:18:28 AM): I obviously got it again, but that was some time ago, for the purpose of having an alternate method of speaking to my girlfriend, besides MSN, which screwed up sometimes.
Jessica (12/8/2006 3:19:27 AM): ohhh
HeLLMasteRHeLL (12/8/2006 3:20:49 AM): Yeah, I remember when I had got it again, seeing your message of how you would be away. Though, to be honest, it was out of date for me and I didn't know you very well to begin with, so I lacked caring on the subject.
Jessica (12/8/2006 3:20:58 AM): ohh
HeLLMasteRHeLL (12/8/2006 3:21:08 AM): No offense, of course.
Jessica (12/8/2006 3:21:53 AM): it's ok
HeLLMasteRHeLL (12/8/2006 3:27:27 AM): I usually appear offline. Though, recently I've gotten a couple contacts worth talking to. And one able to provide some nice intellectual conversation, so I actually appear as available usually now.
Jessica (12/8/2006 3:27:37 AM): do you pictures?
HeLLMasteRHeLL (12/8/2006 3:27:59 AM): Do I have pictures?

Random Ranting / Quotes!
« on: April 01, 2007, 01:00:59 AM »
Hiya peoples! :D

This thread is for the posting of your favorite quotes, actually, not even that. Just the posting OF quotes you like, whether it's your favorite, or just one you happen to find interesting. Post it! If this seems a little bit stupid to you well, I think it's fun, and not only that, allows for an interesting opportunity for one to learn new quotes that they may want to use in the future or whatnot. I know I'm always looking for new quotes that interest me, just as I do new words I may find particularly neat and to my liking. ^^

I'll start this off, with a quote from my absolute favorite movie, and a couple other sweet ones.

"It's only after we've lost everything, that we're free to do anything." - Fight Club.

"Those who desire to give up freedom in order to gain security will not have, nor do they deserve, either one." - Benjamin Franklin

"The best prophet of the future, is the past." - No fucking idea.
It means more to me than a regular quote, though.

Random Ranting / Soul Sojourner's Writing
« on: March 29, 2007, 09:32:47 AM »
That's right, I may post some of my poetry or possibly other writing in this thread. I know I had submitted some books in the past with my poetry and a story in one, in the GodSpire Library. Don't recall all of the ones that I did though.

How often I will add some, I don't know. Most of my poetry that I post, which is still not all of it, is at RoD in my writing thread there. However, we have guest viewing off, so posting a link would defeat the purpose. Instead, I may just post some from time to time, but I doubt it will be as full and updated as the one on RoD. If you do want a link, just ask. That is, if you're willing to go through the effort of whipping up an account just to view it. Which isn't hard I guess, lol.

Bah, anyway. Enough of my mindless ranting. The first one I'll post is the one I wrote last night. It's sort of a twist between a rap and a poem, even though I was writing it as a poem. It's also the only poem that I've ever swore in.

Violent Crimes

See how much it matters,
When the blood splatters,
All over the wall,
Transfixed in dubious gall,
Grab a bat, an axe, a chainsaw,
And tear the fucking shit out of the bodies in the hall,
Vengeance, rage, bloody days,
Shooting out blood in sprays,
Mysterious haze of rage,
Spraying blood in furious waves,
Do you see how much it matters?
See how the bodies are battered?
Left plastered and scattered,
Beaten and tattered...
No fucking conscience,
No empathy,
Killing efficiently,
Fuck sympathy.
Breathing their last, bleeding too fast,
Beat them until it's passed, and continue to laugh,
Just listen now,
Listen to the screaming all around,
Listen as the bodies fall down,
Listen to the hearts beating for the last time,
Listen to my symphony, my poetry, my rhymes,
Listen...
Listen to these violent crimes.

Alright, now, alot of you are probably annoyed by leet speak, when it's just used by people a fuckload on the internet, for no apparent reason but to make themselves look retarded. However, I feel l33t speak is fun, when it's done on purpose and is used properly. So, this thread is for communicating back and forth in l33t. Alot like the drow thread someone once made somewhere else on LM, except that, you shouldn't need a translator every time. If you don't like the idea, and feel like complaining about it, just shut the fuck up and get out of my thread.

General Gaming / What are you playing?
« on: March 12, 2007, 10:22:23 AM »
Well, not too long ago, I was playing Dragon Warrior III for NES, on an emulator. However, I stopped mid-adventure from other things like my friends and stuff on forums distracting me from it. I'll pick it up again soon hopefully.

However, right now, I am currently playing The Elder Scrolls II: Daggerfall. Only since it's for DOS, I had to pick from a small list of soundcards, and the sound is horrible. The midi is decent, but the sound just skips and stutters, and I have no idea what people are saying or what half the sounds are. If anyone knows how to remedy this problem (and yes I went through and tried all the cards with different settings) I'd be appreciative.

So, what are you currently playing?

I love this song...

Quote
How did it start?

Well, I dont know.

I just feel the craving.

I see the flesh and it smells fresh.

And it's just there for the taking.

These little girls they make me feel so god damn

exhilarated.

I feel them up, I can't give it up.

The pain that I'm just erasing.

I tell my lies and I despise.

Every second I'm with you.

So I run away and you still stay.

So what the fuck is with you.

Your feelings I can't help but rape them.

I'm sorry I don't feel the same.

My heart inside is constantly hating.

I'm sorry I just throw you away.

I don't know why I'm so fucking cold?

I dont know why it hurts me.

All I wanna do is get with you.

And make the pain go away.

Why do I have a conscience?

All it does is fuck with me.

Why do I have this torment?

All I want to do is fuck it away.

I tell my lies and I despise.

Every second I'm with you.

So I run away and you still stay.

So what the fuck is with you.

Your feelings I can't help but rape them.

I'm sorry I don't feel the same.

General Anime / TTA
« on: January 14, 2007, 02:07:39 PM »
First I will note that this is NOT anime. However, this seems like the best place for it in my opinion, as there are no other sections that could suit it in any way, except RR, in which case, it would get lost amongst the numerous threads. Also, because there are things about it that are ALOT like anime, this seemed a good place. The series is, at first, entirely made up of video game sprites, animations, and backgrounds/areas. However, it becomes more customized as time goes on, to have more art (actual stuff that does look like anime) and even voices. Despite first appearances, this series is very good, and will probably pull you in, like it did me.

I first found out about TTA on newgrounds, and gave it good ratings where I could, but as it's a series, I don't think I ever bothered to review any. Partly because I didn't have any constructive criticism to give the guy, I didn't have any criticism for him at all. =)

This link will go to his site, the episodes are best viewed there, because alot of episodes are not yet on newgrounds. You simple need press "Play" on the main page, and you can navigate to which episode you want to watch. I would suggest watching episode 1 first, and then all the way through, obviously. =P

Hope you guys like it. At least give it a chance. =)

I got alot of time on my hands right now, though soon I will lose alot of my free-time when I get my job, but I bet I will still be doing this alot so....

Side note: This got me thinking, though I wouldn't pursue it right now. But if, in fact, alot of good discussions were to spring up, should we not have a seperate place for them other than RR, where post count does increase, and good discussion can be carried out without frailty to impending spam? Spam is inevitable, however, the seperate section would be more appropriate and spam could be filtered out with good reason backing the decision.

But anyway, on to what this topic was really created for... Is there any topics/discussions/information/etc. anyone would like to see posted/created but don't themselves for whatever reason? I may be open to whipping up a few things if anyone has anything in mind? B)

Computer stuff / What Is Spyware?
« on: December 26, 2006, 07:22:32 PM »
Spyware is computer software that collects personal information about users without their informed consent. The term, coined in 1995 but not widely used for another five years, is often used interchangeably with adware and malware (software designed to infiltrate and damage a computer).

Personal information is secretly recorded with a variety of techniques, including logging keystrokes, recording Internet web browsing history, and scanning documents on the computer's hard disk. Purposes range from overtly criminal (theft of passwords and financial details) to the merely annoying (recording Internet search history for targeted advertising, while consuming computer resources). Spyware may collect different types of information. Some variants attempt to track the websites a user visits and then send this information to an advertising agency. More malicious variants attempt to intercept passwords or credit card numbers as a user enters them into a web form or other applications.

The spread of spyware has led to the development of an entire anti-spyware industry. Its products remove or disable existing spyware on the computers they are installed on and prevent its installation. However, a number of companies have incorporated forms of spyware into their products. These programs are not considered malware, but are still spyware as they watch and observe for advertising purposes. It is debatable whether such 'legitimate' uses of adware/spyware are malware since the user often has no knowledge of these 'legitimate' programs being installed on his/her computer and is generally unaware that these programs are infringing on his/her privacy. In any case, these programs still use the resources of the host computer without permission.

The source, and more information, some of it even being useful and helpful for identifying and/or removing spwayre, found here, at wikipedia:

Well, there's about a million free programs out there. And a million you can pay for.

However, in my experience, I have determined the best of the best to be Spyware Doctor. This is a paid for program, and everybody knows there is always another 'method' as well. Do not pm me about it, I will not provide you with warez. The program, has been put up against multiple other anti-spyware programs, including many of the top-of-the-line ones as well, such as spysweeper. I have always found the doctor to find spyware the others would always miss, and rarely miss any itself. So this, I highly recommend. And yes, I also highly recommend purchasing it rather than the 'other' method. Also, you can download it, and just use it to 'find' the spyware, you don't need to remove it with the program, you can look at the logs and remove it manually if you know what you're doing.

http://www.pctools.com/spyware-doctor/

They also have free "starter editions" floating around for Spyware Doctor from time to time. You might be able to find a good one if you look.

Now, on to the free stuff right? Okay, okay, I'm getting there.

Malwarebytes Anti-Malware is the absolute best free anti-spyware program I've been able to find other than starter editions of Spyware Doctor. It is also much lighter and less cpu-intensive (especially useful for older computers) than Spyware Doctor is. Typically, I use Malwarebytes as my main anti-spyware program and run it often, and then I occasionally use a starter edition of Spyware Doctor for a good thorough clean, that's a little more time consuming. Here is a link to Malwarebytes website, they have a free version and a non-free one:
http://www.malwarebytes.org/

Ad-Aware is one of the most popular free anti-spyware programs. I'm not too fond of it, myself. Find it here:
http://www.download.com/Ad-Aware-SE-Person...ubj=dl&tag=top5

Spyware bot, or Spybot, search and destroy is another popular one, however, I wouldn't put it on my recommend list.
http://spywarebot.com/?hop=advanced99&p=3&...45447&oid=&aid=

Some other ones/tools:
CounterSpy
Ewido
Windows Defender
SpySweeper
Adaware Away
EZPCFix
CWShredder (For Cool Web Search Removal)
HijackThis (Helpful Tool)
HijackThis Analyzer (Use with HijackThis)
Pest Patrol
Trend Micro Scanner
XP Anti-Spy
Security Task Manager (Very Useful Tool)

Die nasty spyware!

I found a couple bands I think people here who like Cuchulann's music would like.
One is called Tanzwut, the other is In Extremo. Though, In Extremo has some songs that are more metal sounding, but most got that... one icky sound to it I don't like.

Hey, Mr. Mo, or another Admin. I think it'd be a neat idea if you set the litle deal under each forum to "show all posts" in descending order, rather than have it default at "within the last 60 days" or some shit. Yep... it would make my life easier. :)

Feedback & Community / Clean up?
« on: November 07, 2006, 08:15:03 AM »
I was going to make a topic on this a couple days ago and I fucking forgot. <_<

NWN2 is out now, and were it not even released there's still a disorganized mess of sections/forums/sub-forums and topics/posts. I'm guessing alot of what was going on under NWN and GS sections is going to be through. But there's too much crap belonging to those to even want to do anything with that, in my opinion. However, I was figuring a sweep of now-useless sub-forums would be a wise idea. Arivs? Antes? GS SV? Could a possible viewable vault be made to throw topics/posts from now pointless forums be made?

The old dead clans/guilds, destroy the dead ones and send their topics into GS General?
Doriath, Marauders, etc, the live ones, should they be moved into NWN2? Should there be a subsection for GS2 yet, or should we wait until there actually is a GS2 to do either of those things, or possibly all?

Those have some conditions, but I don't think NWN Building does. Should NWN2 building posts/topics be made in that forum? Should a new one be created? Should that one be renamed?

As for the entire roleplaying section, well... if it were kept, is there a point in keeping the WWW sub-forum, or the Guilds forum?

Also to note, the Fun And Games forum isn't really used, nor is the New Members Area.

Now, there's alot more that could be done, moved, changed, re-arranged, etc. but these are just some suggestions. LM was really, for the most part, about GS and NWN, and now that's changing here, a fresh start with a fresh game, and the end of GS1. The community remains strong, and I question if a little "re-vamping" could be in order. Or maybe, if it's a good idea, it should be held off until the actual GS2 is around?

Either way, I posted this to see what everyone else thinks. So, any opinions or ideas relating to the subject?

Computer stuff / Anti-Virus Protection
« on: November 05, 2006, 08:07:18 PM »
Alright, so this is basically a knock-off of a thread I made at RoD as well. But hey, I made the thread so I give myself permission. Basically just gathering the information up, as I would normally just post most of the same content, some is in seperate posts, so I'll combine it all here.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I know what it is like looking for a goddamn decent anti-virus and it can be a bitch when you run into those big money-making bastards like Symantec. Truth is, I've had and used Norton Antivirus, and find it to be shit, plain and simple.

---------------------
So far, the best of the best that I've tried is an anti-virus developed in the Czech Republic known as avast! I didn't capitalize that for a reason. ^^ I use that now, and have been very impressed with it ever since I started using it some time back, I personally recommend it to anyone. I also know how it is having to buy anti-virus, and that was another reason Norton didn't cut it, but avast! is free for home-users. Check it out:
Avast!

---------------------
Also, another free one known as AVG-Free may be useful to you. But I honestly don't recommend it, nor find it to be very good, here's a link to that:
AVG-Free

---------------------
Now, this I have used for awhile. It is quite useful in finding extra spyware or viruses your main anti-virus/anti-spyware doesn't, not only that but it runs online, and you only need to download a program to make that possible. I suggest running this in safe-mode with networking if you feel there is a malicious threat.
Trend Micro

---------------------
And finally I'll mention Antivir... which I would rate as the second best I've used; second only to avast! I believe you need to pay for it though, unlike most of the others here. However, they've had 6 month trial periods and so forth, so maybe they'll have something going on at some point. It might have a free version and a purchase version, I am unsure what's going on with this now, it's been awhile since I've used it. Here it is:
Antivir

---------------------
"Yes you are right norton is shit, and i used avast a lot and found it fantastic. Anyway i still prefer Kaspersky that is simple, fast and really powerful, altough it's not free." - Posted by Frankie10LR
Later research told me, this is one of the best, if not the best, anti-virus out there.
Kaspersky

----------------------
"Myself I have been using Computer Associates products for over 4 years now and knock on virtual wood I never had a problem." - Onix
Computer Associates

---------------------
"It's called F-Secure, and can be tried/purchased by clicking here. This has caught things that Norton never did. In fact, it solved a problem for me that I've been trying to fix for months! It will find spyware and malware (something Norton will never do) and also has all the features that I actually liked about Norton. These include Virus and Spy Detection, Internet Shield (Firewall of good quality), Spam Control, and Web Filtering (which includes some fantastic Parental Controls for those of you with kids. You can not only limit what is viewed, but when as well!) Bottom line is, this is a fantastic program that I believe to be far superior to Norton." - Rune
F-Secure

------------------------------------------

And here is a list of some more:
BitDefender
F-Prot Antivirus
Mcafee
NOD32
Norton
Mcafee Stinger
Panda Online Scanner

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

And that's it, if you wish to add any good ones, or if I have anything to add/change, I'll update it as I go along.

Computer stuff / Fucking Advertisements
« on: November 02, 2006, 04:14:01 AM »
Another post that I had made at Realm of Darkness and bring here, now that this useful little section popped up...

------------------------------------------------

So, you don't like ads huh? Bah, me neither. Ads everywhere... all over websites, making everything load slow. I hate ads.

Well, for Firefox users unaware of this handy little extension, you can get rid of them now quick and easy. You'll want to install both extensions, they work together.

Adblock
AdBlock Filterset G Updater

Extremely easy to use, and definately worthy extensions to have in my opinion. ;)

Just a note, I experienced FF running slightly slower at times, because of this. It may vary depending on comp/connection. But I recommend trying it out first, seeing for yourself, then deciding. If you use FireFox, you should know how easy it is to remove.

Computer stuff / Speed Up FireFox
« on: November 02, 2006, 04:10:11 AM »
A post I made at Realm of Darkness, about a useful peice of information I found elsewhere:

--------------------------------------------------

This isn't one of those plug-ins or shitty programs that say they will "speed up the internet." My previous experience with that crap has made me label it... well... crap.

Just a note, this is for broadband dsl/cable etc. users as far as I know. Probably even more helpful the faster the connection you have, I suggest not doing this if you're on dial-up.

This is the source of the source:
http://clipmarks.com/popular/clip/C170D70C...F-C627EF201AF5/

Just follow it step by step and you shouldn't have any problems. If it, for some reason, seems to have a negative effect, it's easy enough to backtrack and undo what you did.
Here's the information:

"Here's something for broadband people that will really speed Firefox up:

1.Type "about:config" into the address bar and hit return. Scroll down and look for the following entries:

network.http.pipelining network.http.proxy.pipelining network.http.pipelining.maxrequests

Normally the browser will make one request to a web page at a time. When you enable pipelining it will make several at once, which really speeds up page loading.

2. Alter the entries as follows:

Set "network.http.pipelining" to "true"

Set "network.http.proxy.pipelining" to "true"

Set "network.http.pipelining.maxrequests" to some number like 30. This means it will make 30 requests at once.

3. Lastly right-click anywhere and select New-> Integer. Name it "nglayout.initialpaint.delay" and set its value to "0". This value is the amount of time the browser waits before it acts on information it recieves."

Computer stuff / Speed Up Windows XP
« on: November 02, 2006, 04:01:42 AM »
I have some crap for you nerds! =)

Warning: Unless you feel you are experienced enough with computers to know what you're doing, I don't recommend doing alot of this, especially stuff under step 1. Be careful what services you disable, because some of those are meant for people who would not use them, while others may. Make sure to read the descriptions of the services before disabling, and if you are unsure, then leave them be. =)

"1. Disable Unnecessary Services

Because Windows XP has to be all things to all people it has many services running that take up system resources that you will never need. Below is a list of services that can be disabled on most machines:

* Alerter
* Clipbook
* Computer Browser
* Distributed Link Tracking Client
* Fast User Switching
* Help and Support - (If you use Windows Help and Support leave this enabled)
* Human Interface Access Devices
* Indexing Service
* IPSEC Services
* Messenger
* Netmeeting Remote Desktop Sharing (disabled for extra security)
* Portable Media Serial Number
* Remote Desktop Help Session Manager (disabled for extra security)
* Remote Procedure Call Locator
* Remote Registry (disabled for extra security)
* Remote Registry Service
* Secondary Logon
* Routing & Remote Access (disabled for extra security)
* Server
* SSDP Discovery Service - (Unplug n' Pray will disable this)
* Telnet
* TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper
* Upload Manager
* Universal Plug and Play Device Host
* Windows Time
* Wireless Zero Configuration (Do not disable if you use a wireless network)
* Workstation

To disable these services:

1. Go to Start and then Run and type "services.msc"
2. Doubleclick on the service you want to change
3. Change the startup type to 'Disable"

2. Turn Off System Restore

System Restore can be a useful if your computer is having problems, however storing all the restore points can literally take up Gigabytes of space on your hard drive. To turn off System Restore:

1. Open Control Panel
2. Click on Performance and Maintenance
3. Click on System
4. Click on the System Restore tab
5. Tick 'Turn off System Restore on All Drives'
6. Click 'Ok'

3. Defragment Your Pagefile

Keeping your pagefile defragmented can provide a major performance boost. One of the best ways of doing this is to creat a separate partition on your hard drive just for your page file, so that it doesn't get impacted by normal disk usage. Another way of keeping your pagefile defragmented is to run PageDefrag. This cool little app can be used to defrag your pagefile, and can also be set to defrag the pagefile everytime your PC starts. To install:

1. Download and Run PageDefrag
2. Tick "Defrag at next Reboot",
3. Click "Ok"
4. Reboot

4. Speedup Folder Access - Disable Last Access Update

If you have a lot of folders and subdirectories on your computer, when you access a directory XP wastes a lot of time updating the time stamp showing the last access time for that directory and for ALL sub directories. To stop XP doing this you need to edit the registry. If you are uncomfortable doing this then please do not attempt.

1. Go to Start and then Run and type "regedit"
2. Click through the file system until you get to "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\FileSystem"
3. Right-click in a blank area of the window on the right and select 'DWORD Value'
4. Create a new DWORD Value called 'NtfsDisableLastAccessUpdate'
5. Then Right click on the new value and select 'Modify'
6. Change the Value Data to '1'
7. Click 'OK'

5.Disable System Sounds

Surprisingly, the beeps that your computer makes for various system sounds can slow it down, particularly at startup and shut-down. To fix this turn off the system sounds:

1. Open Control Panel
2. Click Sounds and Audio Devices
3. Check Place volume icon in taskbar
4. Click Sounds Tab
5. Choose "No Sounds" for the Sound Scheme
6. Click "No"
7. Click "Apply"
8. Click "OK"

6. Improve Boot Times

A great new feature in Microsoft Windows XP is the ability to do a boot defragment. This places all boot files next to each other on the disk to allow for faster booting. By default this option in enables but on some builds it is not so below is how to turn it on.

1. Go to Start Menu and Click Run
2. Type in "Regedit" then click ok
3. Find "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Dfrg\BootOpt imizeFunction"
4. Select "Enable" from the list on the right
5. Right on it and select "Modify"
6. Change the value to "Y to enable"
7. Reboot

7. Improve Swapfile Performance

If you have more than 256MB of RAM this tweak will considerably improve your performance. It basically makes sure that your PC uses every last drop of memory (faster than swap file) before it starts using the swap file.

1. Go to Start then Run
2. Type "msconfig.exe" then ok
3. Click on the System.ini tab
4. Expand the 386enh tab by clicking on the plus sign
5. Click on new then in the blank box type"ConservativeSwapfileUsage=1"
6. Click OK
7. Restart PC

8. Make Your Menus Load Faster

This is one of my favourite tweaks as it makes a huge difference to how fast your machine will 'feel'. What this tweak does is remove the slight delay between clicking on a menu and XP displaying the menu.

1. Go to Start then Run
2. Type 'Regedit' then click 'Ok'
3. Find "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop\"
4. Select "MenuShowDelay"
5. Right click and select "Modify'
6. Reduce the number to around "100"

This is the delay time before a menu is opened. You can set it to "0" but it can make windows really hard to use as menus will open if you just look at them - well move your mouse over them anyway. I tend to go for anywhere between 50-150 depending on my mood

9. Make Programs Load Faster

This little tweak tends to work for most programs. If your program doesn't load properly just undo the change. For any program:

1. Right-click on the icon/shortcut you use to launch the program
2. Select properties
3. In the 'target' box, add ' /prefetch:1' at the end of the line.
4. Click "Ok"

Voila - your programs will now load faster.

10. Improve XP Shutdown Speed

This tweak reduces the time XP waits before automatically closing any running programs when you give it the command to shutdown.

1. Go to Start then select Run
2. Type 'Regedit' and click ok
3. Find 'HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop\'
4. Select 'WaitToKillAppTimeout'
5. Right click and select 'Modify'
6. Change the value to '1000'
7. Click 'OK'
8. Now select 'HungAppTimeout'
9. Right click and select 'Modify'
10. Change the value to '1000'
11. Click 'OK'
12. Now find
13. 'HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Control Panel\Desktop'Select 'WaitToKillAppTimeout'
14. Right click and select 'Modify'
15. Change the value to '1000'
16. Click 'OK'
17. Now find
18. 'HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\'Select 'WaitToKillServiceTimeout'
19. Right click and select 'Modify'
20. Change the value to '1000'
21. Click 'OK' "

Now, I have no idea where I got that from, but I know I got it from somewhere. I've had it saved in notepad forever. I fucking hate some of that shit that's on by default anyway.

Also, one last thing to add to that, I don't think it's in the list. But it's a simple change that can make general performance better, especially for those of you who could give a shit less about what your set-up looks like:
Right click the taskbar (the bottom bar the start menu is on), hit properties, switch to the start menu tab, and set it to "classic start menu." Now to speed things up even more, either go to display properties under control panel, or right click on the desktop and go to properties. Click the "appearance" tab, and under "windows and buttons" drop down menu, select "windows classic style." Hit apply. This will make everything look kinda like good ole' windows 98. And if you don't care what shit looks like at all, even if you have a great comp, why not? It's just that much better performance. =)

Oh, and the pagedefrag mentioned above? I've been using that forever... lol... link:
