Computer stuff / Re: Looking To Buy a Gaming Laptop
« on: July 26, 2014, 09:15:58 AM »
Looks like a pretty solid machine for a laptop. I used a laptop for gaming through most of college, and it was a okay, but it wasn't really designed for gaming either. If you're only planning to use it while out of town that's probably fine. Laptops like that (actually, pc laptops in general) are a pretty significant weight to lug around, so I wouldn't really bother using it for any other mobile computing needs. The one major concern I'd have is that it might get really hot and noisy, so I'd be prepared to deal with that. One of my college friends had a laptop like that for gaming, and it eventually became really cumbersome for him to use (granted he used it for pretty much everything soooo...).

I'm actually planning on replacing my laptop altogether with a tablet soon. I'm looking at the Surface or Surface Pro...still debating whether the Pro is worth over doubling the price.

Yeah pretty sudden. We've had a bunch of thunderstorms lately, but I don't think we had any that night. I'm actually wondering if the problem is the monitor's port. I'll see if any of the above helps...

Got an interesting new problem: My DVI-D ports don't seem to be transmitting display data to my monitor. I have one on my graphics card and on my mobo, but neither will work. I finally got a display back by using the D-Sub port. I already swapped out the cable, so I know that's not the problem. Any ideas?

edit: also, this was a pretty spontaneous problem. I haven't introduced any new parts lately. I finished watching a movie one night, shut down, and the next morning my display wasn't working.

Yes to all except the UPS. Haven't had money to spare on one. Thanks for the input. I just ordered a new card. It should be here later this week, and then I can get back to playing Child of Light.

Computer stuff / graphics card issues
« on: May 03, 2014, 03:18:55 PM »
So last night my graphics card started giving me some problems. Everything is still rendering just fine, but there's also some static coming through and occasional lines across the screen. I've checked that everything inside my computer case is clean and updated the drivers, but the problem persists. My dad is of the opinion that it's about to die on me (every time this has happened to him, he's had to replace the graphics card shortly thereafter). I just wanted to check the peanut gallery here in case anyone had other ideas I might check.

This is my current graphics card for reference. It's almost two years old.

I've been having fun playing the new Thief game by Square Enix since it came out Tuesday. I think they did a pretty good job rebooting the series. It still feels like a Thief game to me. It jumps into story/plot a lot faster than the old games did. The pure steal this or steal x amount of whatever quests are almost all side jobs.

Occasionally there are slightly odd inconsistencies. At the point in the game I'm at, the Graven have taken over several districts of the city, but they're just as hostile to me as the guards are, even though the first several missions involve helping their leader. And in another mission, you have the option of overloading the vents of a brothel with opium so that everyone passes out, but then you'll still observe major NPCs having conversations through peepholes after that. That particular trick was also poorly implemented...instead of just having all of the NPCs fall asleep, they wait until you're within a certain distance and get knocked out like you hit them with a blackjack. It took me a while to figure out why I kept hearing random screams...consequently when I finished the mission the game told me I took out about 30 more people than I actually did.

Still, lots of fun.

I've given it a try in the beta a couple of times...I wasn't as interested in it as I had hoped, even if I had money to spare on a subscription...

Finished Bioshock: Infinite...I may need time to process that. I seriously wish all game developers put that much time and energy into telling a compelling story. I'll probably replay it eventually.

I think the melee attacks are the only really gruesome combat parts, but they're just so effective! There are definitely some really gory scenes that I have walked into though. I also love how there are definitely some skyrail loops that are clearly only there to use in battles and serve absolutely no other function to the city.

Aside from that I am really enjoying the game. And yeah, the saves are becoming more frequent now.

Interesting. I loved the show, but I have no idea exactly how well it will translate to a game. Let us know when there's something more to look at, especially game play video!

Computer stuff / Re: Internet Service Providers
« on: October 19, 2013, 12:46:21 AM »
My parents have comcast in Massachusetts, but I have no idea what they pay for it. They've had it for years, so it's probably whatever their standard rate is. It's generally been okay when I've been home.

I think every place I've lived in St. Louis has used Charter, but until recently those have all been dorms or large apartment complexes with internet included in the bill. I'm currently paying $30/month for 30mbps/4mpbs in my new apartment, but after the first year that will go up to something like $40-$50. I didn't have a modem, so they charged me $30 for one of theirs, and then proceeded to charge me another $30 to come out and replace it two weeks later when the one they gave me crapped out for no reason. That kind of pissed me off. The service guy had zero clue what was wrong with it.  The only thing that really irritates me about them is that they insist on calling me every few weeks to ask if I want to add cable or phone service, even after I repeatedly tell them that I don't want either because I have neither a land-line phone nor a television. Next time they call I'm planning on asking to speak with their manager to complain.

Yeah, they pissed off most of their consumer base a while back when they split the shipping and streaming services into separate bills. You used to pay the same price to get both services...

Guild Wars 2 General / Re: Fastest Selling MMO

Please, even the original Guild Wars had significant amounts of grind. What did they expect? It might not necessarily be a grind to level (okay, in GW2 that may depend on how you play), but there is always going to be some kind of grind...for items, titles, achievements...

Saw the headline a while back, but I didn't see the inforgraphic. Interesting, especially some of the in game demographic breakdowns. I'm not surprised warriors lead in profession breakdowns - they have by far the strongest damage output, but I'm surprised mesmers and engineers are way at the end...

I was actually very interested in this until they revealed recently that it's going to be subscription based, which I can't really afford....they are actually giving the first thirty days free, but after that it's $15/month. Sad day! What's everyone else think?

Guild Wars 2 General / Re: finally finished gw2...
« on: August 23, 2013, 04:56:49 PM »
Yeah, it took me a while to complete the story for the first game too, but I actually really liked the ending sequence (from Sanctum Cay onward I think) a lot. The story definitely drags a bit getting from the Shiverpeaks through the Maguuma jungle, but at least each step logically makes sense as being part of a story that would change if that mission didn't happen. It actually really bothers me how easily you could take out entire chunks of the GW2 personal story and still have the exact same result. Honestly, in the end I don't think it would have made much of a difference if the players were there or not in GW2.

Also: it helps that I don't have much extra money to be spending on other games...lol!

Yeah, I'm pretty sure only one of the original founders of Arenanet is still with the company...the others have all gone off to other positions at NCSoft and other companies.

Guild Wars 2 General / finally finished gw2...
« on: August 19, 2013, 08:35:43 PM »
...after a year, it's about damn time! Mostly this is just I didn't have a whole lot of time during the school year, and I just didn't put a whole lot of effort into it. And the caveat being I finished the storyline...there's still an absurd amount of content I haven't even touched yet. So I thought I'd leave a few opinions...

As much as I do enjoy the game and as much as I like Arenanet, the story was kind of disappointing and anticlimactic. You'd think a final showdown with a creature called an elder dragon would be exciting, but it was honestly really boring. Cinematically it would totally be interesting to watch, but as far as game play it was really dull. Basically it turned into Deus Ex Machina to defeat Zhaitan. It honestly had a pretty great set up - you've reunited the members of Destiny's Edge, who have all gone into Arah to take on the dragon, but...nothing really happened. Apparently the final mission used to be incredibly difficult. One of the people playing with us told me it took them six hours to finish the first time he played a couple of weeks after launch, but now it's too easy.

Honestly, around level 45-50 I stopped caring a whole lot about the story. The characters weren't really that interesting (there were a couple I wanted to shoot because they were so obnoxious), and a lot of the missions were sort of...side stuff. They didn't really impact the overall course of the game. Except for a few key story missions and the dungeons, most of them could never have happened and the story wouldn't have changed at all. And the dialogue was really lousy. It was kind of after-school special-y a lot of the time, and during the last four or five missions, SOMEONE gets all noble and sacrifices themselves for the mission. The first time it happened (much earlier in the story) it was interesting. When it happens several missions in a row...kinda annoying actually.

I'm kind of disappointed in Arenanet on this point. In the original Guild Wars (and for the most part in Factions/NF/EotN) the story was really tightly put together and interesting, but the only part of GW2's storytelling I felt was on par with GW1 was the Ascalonian Catacombs dungeon, which successfully combined fun gameplay with a story that does a really good job of mining the lore of the original game to enrich the story.

Just wanted to put my thoughts down. I definitely enjoyed the game, but I think Arenanet could have done so much better by the storyline for GW2.

I only played the first one on demo. I was greatly disappointed in the judgement call of your char so early in the game. "Wow, this party was so off the hook that they left their smack, with a needle the size of an icepick, only partly used lying on the floor, let's try some for no reason at all!" *stab* Honestly a junkie that strung out that he would try something like that with no prompting could never have found their way onto an airplane in the first place.

That judgment call will make total sense later in the game.

I actually liked the first bioshock...Although one of my friends recently said that the only way to properly enjoy the first bioshock was to listen to all of the tapes to get the full story unwrapping, otherwise he thought it was boring. That's a shame. I was looking forward to getting Bioshock Infinite when I had the cash to spare. I don't generally have significant chunks of time to devote to playing.

Guild Wars 2 General / Re: GW2 Screenshots
« on: July 22, 2013, 05:51:52 PM »
It's been a while since I've uploaded screenshots, so these are pretty scattered.

1.   From the Fractals of the Mists. Asuras are very creative when naming golems.
2.   I have zero recollection of where I took this from, but I like it.
3.   Vista cinematic of an airship in Orr.
4.   Quaggan Backpack!!!
5.   Ruined temple of Balthazar in Orr.
6.   I don't know why I didn't take more pictures of this, or why this was the one picture I did take, but back in April they did a spoof of old school NES games called the Super Adventure Box.
7.   The current world event: The Bazaar of the Four Winds. Unfortunately it's not quite as exciting as this picture makes it out to be. Then again, I haven't really been paying attention to the associated storyline.
8.   I didn't notice this when I'd passed through this area on Enelya, but this time an npc kindly pointed out that the floor of this area was littered with the bones of human slaves.
9.   From a recent jumping puzzle I discovered. One of the things that reminded me of how much fun it can be to explore Tyria.
10. From a recent boss fight outside the Crucible of Eternity. Playing with four guardians = all of the boons, all of the time.

I've actually been revisiting the Thief series lately. I'm a couple missions into the second game. I played it a little bit when I was really young (like before I started playing NWN), so I never really got far into it. It's been fun going back to it.
