Title: Forms Of Chat
Post by: Ludo on July 04, 2004, 12:07:06 AM
Heya, I was wondering if GS had any IRC channels setup or any Ventrillo, or Teamspeak servers goin... If not it would be really cool to have a chat system going.

A Ventrillo or Teamspeak server would be awesome.. People could talk/chat over the mic... would be interesting and cool.

I have had Ventrillo for like 8 months now.. I haven't experimented with team speak a lot though.

Ventrillo is just annoying... the layout sucks... and it always makes up a new excuse to break.

Teamspeak sucks because my sound card can't support it for more than 5 minutes for some reason.

Aren't you the jolly one?

If those two don't work, do you have any other (mic) chating progs?

BTW, Ventrillo has never "broken" or crashed for me ever.. The layout is fine.. no need to add fluff to your statement..

I'm getting a
"I am the supreme ruler and only my opinion matters" vibe from you....

I don't  use voice chat, don't really need to.

Agreed.

I cant think of a practical voice chat-room.

I mean, hell - how are you supposed to know when to talk?
Ive had 6 years of multi-nation conference calls (using all the latest and most expensive technology), and i still cant figure it out.

go to yahoo.com register a free account download the messenger ask anyone here if they want to chat and screw yourself over trying to get it the voice conference to stay connected.  <_<

Really the only reason for voice chat I can see is a real time first person shooter style game that doesn't have a voice system (or it's voice system sucks).

I am just defending my opinion...

I started this topic to try and see if there could be some type of chat system like that, along with listening and responding to peoples opinions...

Talon, what do you mean how are you supposed to know when to talk?

It's not like everyone is in one channel silent waiting for one person talk..
You strike up conversations.. You talk about NWN, you get to know each other more..  just chilling.

Celestial, Ventrillo never disconnects people/kicks people/crashes or anything of the sort..  So I wouldn't have to worry about downloading some messenger thing fiddling with a voice chat system that is crap.

*Puts on flame gear*

I know everyone isnt going to be silent - thats the whole point.
As ive said, ive probably had more audio conferences than you could imagine, and when 20 people are all trying to say something at the same time, you will see why that technology falls flat on its ass.

Thats why there is 20 different channels you see?  Sure there will be a lot of people in a certain channel some times... but they all won't run their mouths either.  My gosh someone has got to atleast trust me on this.

It doesnt matter how many channels there are.
In fact, having more than a single channel is what causes all the confusion - when everyone starts talking together.
Ive used these technologies time and time again, and other than a roger wilco'esque application (i.e. rogue spear, counter strike, etc) they really are just a useless gimmick.

But feel free to use them if you like.

They really only work if you have a group of individuals that work well together, and do it often.   A small group, that is.

www.chem-x.net, that server has 30+ people on at a time every day, and has been running stable for 7-8 months.
