Title: Does Parry work in NWN2?
Post by: Talon on April 18, 2007, 05:48:40 AM
Parry was the bane of my life in NWN - I always wanted to make a parry char.
Could it be possible that it works in NWN2?
Someone please let me know!

Parry is in nwn2 though in game the bonus drops off differently than what is printed in the manual. The book says that subsequent parries after the total that you can normally make reduce their efectiveness by -3 per each addtional parry. Though in game the penalty states it's -5. The duelist prestige class looks like it makes good use of the skill. I have never had good results from the skill myself as I always got lousy rolls on my coutnerattacks, and so just got slowly taken down by opponents getting through my parry little by little.

Get your nasty GW claws out of him!

I'll build a parry dueler in NWN2 and do some testing with Cuch and Throbble and see what I can find out.

When do you ever parry in Guild Wars?

Even evade has been removed. The only thing that you can do now is block (which makes skills like Irrestable Blow and Sun and Moon Slash that much the better)

Alright, here is my Parry build, now I just need someone to duel me!

All these stats are without equipment on unless otherwise noted.
Quote
Race: Drow (+2 Dex, +2 In t, +2 Cha, -2 Con)
Classes: Fighter 10/Duelist 10
Abilities: Str 10, Dex 24, Con 12, Int 18, Wis 9, Cha 10
Attacks Per Round: 4 (7 APR with 2 rapiers equipped)
Base Parry: 23
In-Game Parry: 42 (46 Parry with 2 rapiers equipped)

Feats
History
Militia: +2 Parry, +2 Craft Armor, +2 Craft Weapons, -2 Will Save

Background
Luck of Heros: +1 All Saving Throws

General
Dodge: +1 AC (req for Duelist)
Mobility: +4 AC vs. AoO (req for Duelist)
Weapon Finesse: Use Dex for AB (req for Duelist)

Toughness: +1 HP per level
Weapon Focus (Rapier): +1 AB
Greater Weapon Focus (Rapier): +1 AB

Two-Weapon Fighting: Penalty -6 primary/-10 off-hand becomes -4/-4
Improved Two-Weapon Fighting: 2nd off-hand attack at -5
Greater Two-Weapon Fighting: 3rd off-hand attack at -10

Two-Weapon Defense: With two-handed or two weapons +1 Shield AC (or +2 Parry while in Parry mode)
Improved Two-Weapon Defense: As above except +2 Shield AC/+4 Parry

Improved Parry: Counterattack on a roll of 5 (Normally Parry requires a roll of 10)

Class Feats
Canny Defense: With no armor/shield, add Int bonus or Duelist level (whichever is lower) to AC
Elaborate Parry: Add Duelist level to parry
Enhanced Mobility: With no armor/shield add +4 AC vs. AoO

Flourish (Special Attack): +2d6 points of damage
Precise Strike: With empty off-hand, +1d6 points of damage (+2d6 at Duelist level 10)

Improved Reaction: Cast haste 1/day for every 2 Duelist levels
Grace: +2 Reflex Saves
Deflect Arrows: With empty off-hand, Deflect first missile attack each round

In addition I got all the racial feats for a drow (including the ability to cast darkness and see invisibility) and all the weapon/armor proficiencies for a fighter.

Feats I would have liked to take:
Skill Focus (Parry): +3 Parry
Improved Critical (Rapier): Double Crit Range
Power Critical (Rapier): +4 to Confirm a Crit (I think)

EDIT: Oh yeah and I have 31 Spell Resist because of the Drow thang

Alright, Throbble and I just did some testing. She built a dueler that was basically like my build (above) but added a level of monk.

This had the following benefits over my build:
1 extra attack per round with flurry
+3 AC from wisdom bonus
+6 AB from Kama (Two-Weapon Fighting gives a better bonus for small weapons)

After a few tests here is the results:

Throbble Attack vs. 420 Parry = Throbble wins with barely a scratch
420 Attack vs. Throbble Parry = 420 wins with barely a scratch
420 Attack vs. Throbble Attack = 420 wins with 29 life left

Answer: Parry continues to suck even with the new feats and a prestige class devoted to it.

And now for the pics!

You know it's bad when your parry build works better when she doesn't use parry.....
