Since David Bowie hasn't had any foreign objects stuck in his eye lately, here's another gross picture for those of you with either a strong stomach or a bucket.

I think it would be fair that we offer translated versions of the rules and guides.
First, I disagree that it would be "fair" to pretend we support other languages. DMs and Sents don't speak them, so how would we arbitrate between a German speaker and a French speaker? A modicum of English (even if it is ungrammatical and misspelled) is a requirement on GS.

Second, even if we limit ourselves to the languages Bioware (half-assedly) supports, this is still a totally impracticable idea. As a professional in the world of Having Text Translated, I have a good idea of the effort required to translate and then maintain the translated versions of everything: it's very, very costly. My God, we can barely spell in English, we have no hope of getting it right in French, Italian, German, or Spanish.

We can get an impartial DM to referee.  Hopefully.  Please 420, or Throbble, or Xen, or Mel, or Raven, or Taffy.
If y'all can avail yourself to my services as a DM before one or the other avails themselves to my services as a mercenary, then I'll be happy to referee.

After all, from where I'm sitting, it's wall-to-wall clannies.

Dude, no. The solution here is:
1. Back up all the files in your localvault, dmvault, modules directory, and just about everything else you think might be created after installation. Put these files in a different folder or drive.
2. Uninstall NWN.
3. Reinstall NWN.
4. Copy the files you backed up into their correct locations in the new install.

It may not be the quickest way, but I bet you never screw your install up again!

Random Ranting / So...Kerry or Bush?
« on: August 29, 2004, 03:55:03 PM »
Four years of Bush has left me worse off than I was when Clinton left office. I find the Bush administrations tactics disturbing, and am concerned about our loss of civil liberties. If it continues in the vein it's been in since 2001, they'll be using the Patriot Act to round up dissenters.

From my perspective, it has to be Kerry.

Well, if the poster was adding interesting intellectual fodder to the discussion, I wouldn't mind. But some of the longer sigs out there are 1) much longer than anyone is going to bother to read, and 2) longer than any single post made by that person.

I definitely think we should limit sig lengths, though the implementation might not be as simple as that.  I think the most effective limit (if possible) would be a file size limit on images in sigs.  Or how about a 150 pixel height limit?

BTW, this is a particularly egregious example, but many of the sig graphics out there are annoying.

Well, I woulda said something witty, but Bus censored himself.

And Talon, I feel that, as resiliant as Dwiffy is, and as cuddily as Bus is, it isn't so much a "chucked at" as a "cherished towards".

Maybe this poll will only make sense to Americans who remember the 80's, but I'm in hell every time I walk down the street lately. I can't go a block without gawking at the retro ugliness that surrounds me.

Example: On Sunday. 420 and I saw a women in a pink/mauve/fuschia, stripped, off-the-shoulder, enlarged-neck-hole shirt paired with neon green polyester hip huggers. What is wrong?!

Random Ranting / How AOL ruined the Internet
« on: August 26, 2004, 02:01:51 PM »
I didn't want to get into this per se, but since 420 is proffering interpretations of my word-hole, I'm going to take the bait (mo's a troll, by the way).

I don't actually agree that only geeks should have access to the web- accessibility is one of its greatest assets!  But I do think that AOL trained a huge set of users with low expectations and lame behaviors that are detrimental to the web.

For instance, AOL has always been shamelessly self-promoting, and has clogged many's the landfill with their CDs. For that alone I would probably hate them. But, the ramification of their self-promotion is that internet users now expect it. If you don't ram your name down everyone's in-box, you're no one.

Another problem I have with AOL is the overly-simplified interface: it's assumes the user is ignorant and wants to remain ignorant. Users can't *learn* anything about what they're actually doing. This leads to ignorant users all over the web who expect that everyone uses AOL and everything should look and work like AOL.

AOL's dreadful history of performance problems and disconnects has trained people to expect crappy internet connections, and I can't abide that. People should expect better than AOL, but because of AOL's proliferation, they don't. (This last applies to Starbucks, Walmart, Microsoft, etc. It may be a fact of the "new economy" but it seems like putting all your eggs into one basket).

Now Mo, I do agree that the commercialization of the web was inevitable, but it didn't necessarily have to be the mass of uneducated users with low expectations and high frustration levels that it often is. And I blame the culture AOL built and propagated for a lot of those expectations.

Do AOL users get some grapes? :P
I'll ignore the fact that you clearly have no idea why it would matter if Talon had used google, and head straight for these facts:
1) Google and AOL are not comparable. One is a search engine, the other is an ISP.
2) AOL lusers would be lucky to get back of my hand, never mind the toe of my hobnail boot.

Go ahead and call me a snob, but I won't forget that AOL systematically ruined the web.

Okay, I did a bit more poking around about this, and found that, while is can't *see* any messages in my mesenger, the forum seems to be storing some 60-odd messages I can't access. I'd use the empty folders thing, but one PM I received is so unspeakably foul, I must preserve it.

But something is definitely rotten in the state of PM.

Okay kiddies,

Please keep the forum rules in mind, in particular:
This is not a site for warez!

And don't give me anything about "cracks aren't warez." Neither Bioware nor Nathan want you posting NWN cracks. What you do behind closed doors in email is your business, but keep it off the forums.
