Diablo III General / First Look at Patch 2.1.0
« on: June 17, 2014, 06:21:36 PM »
http://us.battle.net/d3/en/blog/14244559/first-look-patch-210-6-17-2014

They are adding ladder seasons (Now just called "Seasons") and Greater Nephalem Rifts. The Seasons will have unique legendary items that will become available to non-season players after the season ends. Greater Nephalem Rifts will drop legendary gems that can only be socketed in amulets and rings. These legendary gems will be infinitely upgradable by completing additional Greater Rifts.

Huge change to Dexterity! Dex will now add to armor instead of dodge, which basically makes the monk the same as a barb and crusader regarding defense. (Not sure why they didn't just fix dodge.)

Health globes will give less life but life on hit and life regeneration item mods will be greatly buffed. Not sure if the change to item mods will be retroactive.

Diablo III General / No More Unique Legendary Crafting Material
« on: June 10, 2014, 08:46:37 PM »
Today's patch removed the requirement of unique crafting materials for crafted legendary items. I was going to post a thread about how to farm these items, but the point is now moot. The price to sell these now useless items to a store has been upped to 50k a pop.

Here are the official patch notes and the relevant quote:

http://us.battle.net/d3/en/blog/14397824/patch-206-now-live-6-10-2014

Quote
-Unique crafting materials are no longer required
-Legendary crafting materials will no longer drop
-Existing Legendary crafting materials will now be grey and have had their sell prices increased

Note: The generic legendary crafting material "Forgotten Souls" that you get from parting level 61+ legendary items is still a required item in crafting.

From this thread.

So, I looked into this a bit more and it turns out that, not only are there legendary items that only drop in Torment difficulty, there are also legendary items that only drop from Horadric Caches and those legendary items are also dependent on what act you got the cache from.

Read more about it here:

Diablo III General / Dane Bright
« on: May 28, 2014, 12:50:44 PM »
There is an article on b.net talking about finding Dane Bright, a merchant that very rarely spawns but sells legendary and set crafting plans. Best place to farm for him is the Northern Highlands because it is so small.

GUIDE: Bright Here Bright Now

Anyway, I decided to look for him after I read the article and I got him on the first try!

Diablo III General / Patch 2.0.5
« on: May 14, 2014, 11:45:15 AM »
There was a patch for D3 yesterday that changed a ton of changes to skill mechanics and gameplay. Many "underused" skill were given damage buffs and the Crusader finally got 30% damage reduction (same as the Barbarian and Monk).

The patch notes that were posted through the battle.net client were out dated and wrong in many places (for instance, it says the Crusader got 15% DR instead of 30%).

Anyway, the final patch notes can be found here: 2.0.5 Patch Notes

Diablo III General / Getting the Historian of Westmarch Achievement
« on: May 13, 2014, 07:26:55 PM »
There is an Act 5 achievement called "Historian of Westmarch" which is a bit difficult to get but I finally got it this weekend after many tries.

The issue is that there are two particularly difficulty series of lore that need to be found, "The History of Pandemonium" (parts 1-4) and "The Discovery of Sanctuary" (parts 1-3). They can both be found in the Battlefields of Eternity.

However, there are some restrictions:

"The History of Pandemonium" - Found on "Angelic Scrolls" (Spawns 1x per game)

"The Discovery of Sanctuary" - Found on "Ancient Corpse" (Spawns ~1 every 3 games)

Hopefully this helps anyone suffering a OCD meltdown because they can't get the achievement.

Diablo III General / Theorycraft Thursday
« on: April 30, 2014, 05:04:36 PM »
Link: http://us.battle.net/d3/en/blog/13813405/welcome-to-theorycraft-thursday-4-17-2014

Blizzard is doing a sort of community spotlight deal where you can submit your builds and if they choose you then, uh, shit happens I guess.

Anyway, link is above, here are the basics:

Quote
How to Participate:

Interested? Awesome! To participate, just send an e-mail to TheorycraftThursday@blizzard.com with the following information:

The name, if any, of your build. (If you don't have one, I am not completely responsible for the lame pun your build may wind up being associated with.)

The mode in which you use this build. (Normal, Hardcore, or dare I say... Seasons?) Feel free to mention what difficulty you play on too!

Which skills, runes, and passives you use. A link to your build using the Skill Calculator would also be appreciated.

A screenshot of and/or a link to your character profile. (If you only submit a link to your character profile but not a screenshot, please do not change your skills until you've received a confirmation e-mail that we've received your submission.)

The names of any items or Legendaries that help this build flourish. If it doesn't focus on a build-changing Legendary, that's cool too - just let us know!

What this build does best. Do you use this build primarily for doing Bounties? Or do you use it for playing Campaign Mode?  Whether you're taking on Infernal Machines or doing a bit of everything, be sure to specify!

What makes this build AWESOME. Does it showcase big crits, or is it great at clearing large packs? Maybe it's super mobile, or features supreme survivability?

Two to three screenshots of your build in action!

I submitted Frostillicus. Here are the screenshots I took:

Diablo III General / Gem Removal Cost Reduction

Hey, everyone!

I have some information to share with you about an upcoming change we're planning to make. We intend to reduce the gold cost to unsocket top tier gems in a future patch. The goal of this change is to help balance unsocketing costs with other resource sinks and make the act of unsocketing a top tier gem feel less punitive. These value below are not final and of course subject to change, but here's what we're currently looking at:

  • Flawless Imperial from 150k to 125k
  • Royal from 250k to 150k
  • Flawless Royal from 500k to 175k

We don't have a time frame to share on when to expect these changes right now, but it is in the works. We'll be sure to share additional news as soon as we can, and we hope this heads up helps!

Still too expensive in my opinion. They need a way to preview gems in an item.

General Gaming / Borderlands 2 Crashing
« on: December 29, 2013, 01:18:22 PM »
I got Borderlands 2 GotY for Christmas but it crashes every time I get to a certain point. On my way to Captain Flynt while fighting his minions below the dragon ship. I updated my video drivers and even tried switching from my Sound Blaster card to the motherboard's sound card but it still crashes near the same area every time.

Anyone hear of this problem or have suggestions that I haven't tried?

I will hunt down Santa and impale his fat ass if my present is broken.

General Gaming / Tales from the Borderlands
« on: December 10, 2013, 11:54:42 AM »
Telltale Games (creators of the Sam & Max and Monkey Island series) are going to be making a new story based game set in the Borderlands setting.

I've had people recommend Borderlands to me but they say I should skip the first one and just play Borderlands 2 so I'm waiting for Steam to put together a Game of the Year edition so I can get all the DLCs bundled together.

Anyway, there isn't much to see yet but there is a short trailer on their site.

General Gaming / Hearthstone
« on: December 03, 2013, 05:52:27 PM »
A couple weeks ago I got into the beta for Blizzard's Warcraft themed online card game Hearthstone. (Strangely enough, I got into the beta just a couple days after I downloaded and installed the beta of Blizzard's new game launcher.)

Anyway, after playing for a couple weeks I decided I can post some opinions about the game.

First, if you are at all familiar with collectible card games (especially Magic: The Gathering) then you will have no trouble getting into this game. It's a bit dumbed down for a CCG but that's necessary to keep the games short. (They last around 10 min.)

There are 9 classes you can choose from, each one gets to build a deck from a pool of "neutral" cards and a pool of class-specific cards. Higher quality cards can be bought from packs of random cards that you can buy for gold (which you obtain by completing daily quests) or real world money.

Cuchulann's sister is in the beta also, but it seems that opponents are chosen randomly in multiplayer matches so I haven't played against her yet. There is also "Practice" which is basically just single player (vs. AI) and "Arena" which costs gold/money to participate in and is basically a sealed deck tournament against random real players. No idea what the rewards are for winning Arena tournaments.

I finished Bioshock: Infinite and Throbble just got Assassin's Creed IV, so it looks like I'll be playing this and D3 for the near future. Though an interesting DLC came out for Saints Row IV last week that upgrades superpowers...

Random Ranting / CANDY!
« on: November 20, 2013, 11:11:40 PM »
I'm a big fan of dark chocolate, though milk chocolate will do if nothing else is available. But I hate any sort of fruit or nuts in my chocolate. Fruit and nuts aren't candy damnit!!!

However, I'm an even bigger fan of high fructose corn syrup based candy, Skittles being my favorite.

Anyway, post stuff about candy here!

This is a pic of a bowl on my desk with a mixture of Skittles Darkside ("The other side of the rainbow") and Christmas (red and green) M&Ms Dark.

Diablo III General / Design a Legendary
« on: November 08, 2013, 12:03:11 PM »
Thought I had posted about this before. Anyway, in case anyone hasn't seen this, Blizzard is asking the community to design a legendary weapon.

The first poll, weapon type, is already done. The winner is (surprise) one handed sword. (I voted for one handed axe because axes rule swords!)

Design a Legendary, Part 2: Choose Your Theme

I voted for "Westmarch", since I figure they could make the item fit in with some of the expansion storyline or background.

Diablo III Builds / "Explosive Impairment" - Crowd Control Demon Hunter
« on: October 29, 2013, 09:41:55 PM »
Nightgaunt - Crowd Control Demon Hunter

Concept
Originally, this was my magic find build. I planned to rely on being in a group and spreading around crown control effects while the others did the real damage. However, I determined that the magic find from my primary barbarian's paragon level combined with the fact that he can farm MP3 made him more efficient for item hunting. So, I decided to craft a bunch of new equipment to replace most of the magic find items my demon hunter was wearing. (She also got my primary demon hunter's old crossbow since I recently found the Manticore.) This upped both her offense and her defense in a big way (+25k damage, +10K life), allowing her to now farm MP3.

Anyway, even with the new equipment, the concept behind the build is essentially the same: Spread around as many crowd control effects as possible. When I first designed the build I wanted to try to make a demon hunter that didn't use any bow related skills *gasp!*. To that end, Bola Shot is the only bow related skill in the build. (I needed a good single target attack and the Bola Shot still fits in with the whole explosive device theme.)

Build: Skills

Profile: Nightgaunt

Strategy
The strategy here is to impair creatures with slow, stun, and immobilize ("pinned"), then dish out damage with bola/grenades and traps. There are several crowd control effects that this build utilizes:

Slow - Caltrops (Hooked Spikes rune), Companion (Spider Companion rune)

Stun - Bola Shot (Thunder Ball rune), Grenades (Stun Grenades rune), Fan of Knives (Fan of Daggers rune)

Immobilize (Once every 7 seconds.) - Spike Trap, Fan of Knives

Passive Skills: All three passive skills enhance various active skills as follows:

Thrill of the Hunt - (Works with Spike Trap and Fan of Knives.) Every 7 seconds the next skill that costs Hatred immobilizes the target for 2 seconds. This works great with AoE skills as it affects multiple targets. Combine with Spike Trap's Echoing Blast rune and you can keep a group of enemies rooted in place even longer.

Cull the Weak - (Works with skills that slow. See above.) Damage against slowed enemies increased by 15%.

Numbing Traps - (This build uses 4 of the 5 skills listed!) Fan of Knives, Spike Trap, Caltrops, Grenades, and Sentry reduces enemy damage by 20% for 3 seconds.

Before Combat: Summon the Spider Companion and make sure to re-summon it when it dies. It has collision detection so it's useful as an extra target/obstacle for enemies and it runs really fast so it's likely to slow an enemy before you even begin attacking.

Entering Combat: Throw down a Spike Trap to immobilize the enemy, then attack with either Bola Shot (single target or small group) or Grenades (Big group).

Combat: Continue to attack with the main or secondary attack as the situation warrants while placing/replacing Spike Traps every couple seconds. As the enemy starts to close in drop a Caltrops at your feet along with a couple Spike Traps and start backing away from the enemy. If anything gets within melee range use Fan of Knives to stun everyone around you and escape to safer ground.

Preferred Follower
I use the Enchantress because she has some skills that really compliment this build. Forceful Push and Missile Ward are both great defensive skills for a ranged character, keeping melee enemies from closing in and reducing the damage of ranged enemies, respectively. Erosion is a very effective AoE damage spell against slowed, stunned, and immobilized targets since those effects keep them in the damaging area longer.

Marcia Wallace, the voice of Edna Krabapple on The Simpsons, died last night. You may also remember her as the receptionist Carol on The Bob Newhart show. (If you are too young to remember that show: screw you!) She was 70. RIP Marcia Wallace.

Fox just signed up The Simpsons for another season (Season 26) and I wonder how they are going to handle the death of Bart's teacher and Ned's wife.

Random Ranting / Hulu Exclusive TV
« on: September 30, 2013, 09:10:49 PM »
There are a couple hilarious Hulu exclusive shows that Throbble and I have been watching recently.

These shows are free, they do not require a Hulu Plus account to watch:

Quick Draw (8 Episodes)
Wild west comedy set in Great Bend, Kansas (near Dodge City). The writers write all the overarching plot and scenes but all the dialog is improvised.

It's got a Harvard educated sheriff who is new to town, a whore house run by his girlfriend, an uneducated but insightful deputy, and an undertaker who got the job because he's good at making boxes.

Moone Boy (6 Episodes)
Co-written and co-staring Chris O'Dowd. (Roy from the IT Crowd.) It's about a naive 12-year-old boy from a fucked up family in 1989 who has an imaginary friend named Sean Murphy (Chis O'Dowd). Good stuff.

EDIT: Restored the description for Moone Boy which was cut off by an invalid apostrophe.

Diablo III General / Permanent (Almost) Berserker
« on: September 29, 2013, 12:34:12 PM »
I thought I had posted this when I found out this trick but I don't see the thread so I must have forgotten.

Anyway, when using Wrath of the Berserker with the Thrive on Chaos rune you can increase the duration of Berserker by gaining fury (1 second for every 25 fury). A few months ago I found out that, when your fury globe is full, the fury you gain isn't counted so it doesn't increase the Berserker duration.

To get around this stupid mechanic, players spam a skill that costs fury while they are in Berserker mode and their fury globe is full. For my primary barbarian I spam Battle Rage, for my secondary, Run Like the Wind. This makes it so that I can stay in Berserker mode as long as there is something on the screen to fight. (Especially with the increased monster density.)

Just wanted to let people know.

Valve is planning to release their own game controller. Called the "Steam controller" right now but I'm sure they will come up with a fancier name. It's in beta test but it looks pretty cool.
