GodSpire General / Taarna Reborn

Taarna has returned... this is interesting... Has The Gathering started?  It would seem so... The Spire is up or will soon be up... Lord Elessar now has NWN Platinum... Nathan has probably reinstalled the game by now... Who else will return?  420?  Throbblefoot?  Calia?  Xen?  Nemesis?  I don't know... only time will tell.

The gathering has indeed begun.. and it calls to even those long forgotten...

Well.. a few things here..

Druids are always gonna be kinda weak played pure caster.. in one on one pvp at least... a druid's strength seems to be based around Massive AE damage.  Seems in TvT they'd be nice to have.

There are plenty of ways to beat mages without another mage or a SR monk.  I have 2 characters that frequently beat mages and neither are SR monks or mages.. I have one character that's beat every mage I've fought with him except Mo's Palemaster (damn crit immunity).

Eh, I wanted to say a lot more.. but I've kinda lost interest.. happens when I've been drinking.

That's possible with IE too... but a real pain in the ass to do.  You have to edit some file I can't remember the name of... something dns.ini or something like that.. basically an override for the DNS search.

**Edit**

Incidentally this is how a lot of spyware works too.. it places it's name in that file so that no matter what you type you go where it wants you to.

NwN Building / Building With Cep Issue
« on: August 02, 2004, 10:03:00 AM »
Ok, this is the file you need to add.  (I missed this the first time).

When you're adding the CEP Hak's to your module, you add the haks in the little hak window.  UNDERNEATH that there is the custom tlk table.  You need to add the file cep.tlk in that window... I think that's the file name.  It's something .tlk.  This file is what tells the toolset how to categorize the CEP items/scripts on the palette.

This is the #1 btk* error encountered with CEP.

This image should help, notice the field at the bottom.

Lilac Soul's Generator

This was linked by 420 above, but I just had to add a bit to it.  I have been playing with this for a few days and I gotta say it's awesome.  The designer of this program put a lot of work in, and the program itself is very simple to use.  The interface just asks you a few questions on what you'd like to do, and the program compiles the code and pastes it to the clipboard for you.

Few things I've used it for so far:

Complex conditional statements (Sucks getting lost in the stream of if.. then's).

Customizing NPC actions/animations (I hate doing this).

Debugging code.

Now it doesn't work strictly as a code debugger.. but if you've got a function that just *isn't* working right, then just create it using this, compare the code and see where you  screwed up.

I'd say for the novice and experienced coder alike this is a very useful tool.

And asking "why the hell would you want that?" is expressing what I mean about "pure" leveled characters. You expect them to be boring yet of those out there of the best of the best has taken the time to make strong "pure" characters.
That's true to an extent.  I saw a level 40 fighter that was holding his own as an archer with the AAs on Godspire a month or so ago.

My point is a "pure" character is the default.  Level 40, one class, is what the game defaults to in leveling.. there are some decent pure builds though.

However, if you can make a character clicking recommended the whole way through that will beat any of my characters I would be very surprised.  The "weapons they have available" is meaningless.. because "recommended" fighter levels will always weapon spec in longsword... which is a shitty PvP weapon.

The truly skilled players are coming up with builds and ideas no one's thought to bring into the pvp arena yet.  I've seen a *lot* of pure builds.. and most of them have major weaknesses.

The skill in building a pvp character is using multiple classes to complement and cover the weakness of another class.

Take again the wizard/barbarian combo I mentioned before.  18 Wizard gives access to all the spells, however when a wizard is casting they are considered flatfooted, so vulnerable to melee/ranged attack.  2 Barbarian levels gives uncanny dodge which covers that weakness.

This example is an obvious one, and very popular.  There are a lot of combinations out there that aren't considered however, because many classes have abilities that are quite secondary to thier primary ones... yet these abilities really shine through when combined with another class.

Your build is as much the specific strengths you accentuate as it is the classes and levels you combine.  With so many options, I revert to my original point, unique builds are *very* possible.

I mean say player A. dislikes player B., for whatever reason.....so player A comes over to a sent and complains that player B. is randoming...we (sents) would have no way of telling if player A. was lying -- and we certainly don't have the time to go questioning every player in the area of the crime.
That's very true.. which is where it lies in the judgement of the sentinel.  Most of the time I'll respond with "Ok, I'll keep an eye on that person," although that's very dependant on the person.  If someone reports a person to me, and the person doing the reporting is someone I trust, and know to be an upstanding member of the community, I'm likely to take thier word on it, but usually won't resort in a stoning immediately.

If, however, I go to speak with the alleged randomer and they start running away.. that's usually an indication of guilt.  That person will be stoned for a few seconds, released, and spoken with.  If after being released they continue to run around instead of listening.. they stay stoned... I really don't like talking to myself.

I, and I believe most other sents as well, have a method for dealing with almost any situation, but this requires that players who are randomed/griefed on by another player make us aware of the situation if we don't notice it.

NwN General / Disarm:
« on: July 16, 2004, 01:27:37 AM »
I look at it this way man.. If you disarm a person enough times, it's going to force them to remake thier character or gear to prevent that.

If you can force another player to make a change in thier character, then not only does that prove that you've come up with a tactic they didn't consider, but you've also taught that person something.

« on: July 15, 2004, 04:57:20 PM »
I see no problem with disarm at all, I think it's a valuable tool if you can get it to function properly.  I've only successfully disarmed someone twice, and both were pretty noobified.

Belog stealinga  weapon, who cares.. reload the character and it's fixed.  If someone's discipline isn't high enough to withstand a disarm check in the low to mid-70s (average disarm check of a level 40 melee), then they need to be disarmed... Hell a level 20 character should be able to withstand disarm from a level 40 with the rolls work.

If you find an opponent vulnerable to disarm, I say disarm them to your heart's content.

I dont know why but there has been a decline of sents in gs
There are more sents now than there have ever been at any point in Godspire.. this is no "decline in sents."

Quote
Why this is i dont know and could the sents plz be more observent

One of the reasons sents aren't noticing some of the more malicious randomers, is these people KNOW what the yellow lights mean.  They commit thier infractions out of view of sents, or wait specifically until a sentinel is in a duel and therefore distracted.

If you see a randomer let someone know, I've quit in the middle of many duels to deal with a randomer.. that's part of being a sent.  But if I'm fighting someone my attention probably isn't going to be on the other side of the arena.

If the police only caught criminals who commited crimes in front of them, there wouldn't be too many criminals caught... you have to actually report this stuff... and that doesn't include chasing the person all over the arena.

If I see 4 people running around hitting some guy that's not fighting back (as often happens with a randomer), that means I have four randomers to stone.

Send me a tell instead if I'm on.. it's easy to do, /tp "Lord_Aiden" will send a tell to me regardless of what character I'm on.  Other sentinels I would encourage to also post your account names, can make reporting a "criminal" easier.

New/unique maybe but do they work in PVP i dout it there is very little if any new builds (pvp ones).
That's my point exactly, the truly unique builds are the ones that when you hear them your first questions is "why the hell would you want that?" You don't *expect* these builds to be decent in PvP.  They do not fit the preconcieved notions for the class.  I've gotten this reactoin many times.. then people see the character in action and it's duplicated.

I am fully confident that any given class combination can be decent in PvP, only exception is some few pure builds.  Hell, I think Taffy even made a viable Harper Scout pvper.

What good are ya at making characters if ya can't do a "pure" leveled character and kick ass?

Because just picking one class and leveling it to 40 takes no skill or imagination, it's the same thing as continuously clicking "recommended."

<Is only posting in this fashion so as not to disturb the game in progress, even tho he does not agree that this topic should persist.  Also realizes that some people are just trying to have fun.

V Will probably have some opinion on the matter.. either to agree with me if it's Talon or complain if it's someone that likes to boost their postcount by virtue of this thread.

There was also the fact that Clarity is not the only spell that allows this to work.  Lesser Mind Blank works as well, which has absolutely no justification for working (except maybe bioware used identical scripts with few adjustmetns for the two spells).

Seems there were a few other spells/feats/conditions that would allow tashas to pass savingthrows as well.

Hey, when I've been PvPing for over 2 years now in NwN, I make a build I have *never* seen before, and the next day I see three other people with the same build, do you *really* think that's coincidence?

We all know of standard builds and such that float around, and sometimes there are a few new ideas introduced, but I currently use an archer build I have yet to see anyone else even attempt, because it's not one that really comes to mind when you think of archers.  However it's become very effective.

When using this build I often get asked what classes I have.. usually I don't answer.  If I did I guarantee you I'd see a copy of it show up.. and yes that's stealing someone's build.

There are 11 base classes and 11 prestige classes.  This gives roughly 4862 possible permutations of class combinations.  This does NOT however factor in level combinations OR race, which I consider a part of a unique build (race to a lesser extent).  That calculation was way more complex than I wanted to go through for this post, but trust me, it exponentially increases the number of possible builds.. and the level spread of classes dramatically influences the build as well.

For Example (SoU example):
18 wizard 2 barbarian: Caster build
18 Barbarian 2 Wizard: Melee build

My calculations count both as the same build.. you can see that even based on this, the possible permutations are more likely double what I came up with.

Given the size of the community on Godspire, the regulars in particular, and the number of people that use very similar builds, it is *very* possible to come up with an entirely unique build to our server, not to mention the D&D rules are designed to allow an extreme variety of possible characters to allow each person to develop a character unique to themselves.

In fact Taffy himself told me that my build was "a bold idea."  Which I doubt he would have said had he seen it before.

So don't even give me that "you couldn't possibly have a unique build" crap.  I'm sure somewhere someone else did something similar to the unique builds I've come up with, but they haven't brought them to godspire, and Godspire is what I'm concerned with.

If you're already planning on doin that I'm not gonna touch it.  I wouldn't know where to begin writing a server extension for anything.. not even sure what language it would be written in or how it would interface with the game =)

Really its just a function of my laziness... little work now to avoid a lot later.. if you're already planning on doing the work then my laziness wins out =)

This is my RP character, Marius.  This picture is of him in the Necromantic Tower, the throne room more specifically.  The throne behind him is his throne, this was shortly before a meeting of the Council of the Dead.

And yes, he's Drow.

NwN General / Atomic Chicken
« on: July 14, 2004, 08:17:42 PM »
Ok, I've been trying to find the Atomic Chicken server for hours now so I could get a taste of how the other side lives...(see my challenge in 12-20ac forum).

My question is this:  Where is it?  It's the only LucidMagic-member endorsed server I've been made aware of so far, and I can't seem to locate it.  Has it been down all day?

Also, to repeat myself here (this started with a 9ac vs 12-20ac topic):

Give me your server name, restrictions, banned spells, ILR, banned feats etc.. where the server is located, and your character name.  I'm looking to challenge 12-20 acers on thier home turf... with the hope it will entice more to come to Godspire and try out our ruleset as well.

It's just my opinion that if more people took the time to really develop a character under godspire rules,  and get used to the balance, they would begin to enjoy it more than 12-20 ac.  By the same token, I am seeing if the same holds true in reverse.. which is why I'm looking for some good 12-20 ac PvP action.

So give me some info.

Also, if you notice you're oppent can't defend himself against somthing that makes he has no change to win at all. You better don't use it.
I very much agree.  I have characters that can use WoF or balagarn's horn or similar annoying spells.  If a person I am fighting is not able to defend against these spells, then I don't use them.

Now, that doesn't mean I won't use them against someone without remove blindness/spell mantle.  This means that I won't use them if it 100% disables them and makes them unable to respond.  If you, for instance, WoF my strength fighter, you're not gonna hurt him too much.  Sure I'll be a little bit easier to hit, but I'm still going to be pounding on you just as much as I would without it.  An arcane archer who's hitting on every shot isn't too hurt by a balagarn's horn burst every few rounds, because when they *are* standing up, they're doing close to 100 damage a round (at least mine does).

Basically what I'm saying, like Mel said, game balance can only be enforced by scripting and server rules to a point, the rest relys on the consideration we have for our fellow players.

Now on the other side of that, I will *almost* never complain about someone's tactics.  I say if it's in the game, use it against me... but don't complain when I respond in kind.

If I know your character type and refuse to duel you.. well that will rarely if ever happen, but if it does it's only because I know I have little if any defense against you with my current build.  Most of the time I'll still duel you anyway.

The *only* issue related to this I really run into... if you're going to cast WoF on me and then silence yourself... well dont' get all pissy and call *ME* cheap when I turn around and remove blindness instead of letting you pound on me... (ok.. so that only happened once).

PvP in Neverwinter nights is very much Rock/Paper/Scissors... No matter how often you win, there's always a build out there that's gonna beat you.  And it's quite likely someone you've killed will be able to beat them.  Every build has its strengths and weaknesses, and few are universally uber.

Only real thing I can't stand is stealing someone's build.  If you can't use your own mind to come up with something unique on your own, don't pvp.  Sure there are a lot of mroe obvious builds taht are popular, but when you notice someone's kickin ass out there, don't try to rip off what they've come up with.. that's just really lame.
