Can caster classes that start out wearing cloth armor eventually learn to wear mail?  If so is there a penalty to wearing mail?

lol caster in mail?  What are you scared of?  Only a poor mage would consider wearing any sort of armor.  ;)

The only caster class that can wear mail is Shaman. Mages stick to cloth. Priests, the same. Druids get leather.

Not Mages, but Shamans can use shields. Shields are mainly used by Warriors and Paladins.
