Royal Australian Air Force

Australia orders 24 Super Hornets for the RAAF. (http://www.strategypage.com/militaryforums/512-33929.aspx)

Oddly enough, I have absolutely no opinion on this topic whatsoever.

Well the main question is. Are they getting the best value for money? What about cancelling the SH purchase, and going for a Mixed F-22/F-35 fleet. Or if the F-22 is out of the question what about the Typhoon/Rafale/Su-XX?

Opinions please?

420 do you not have an interest in military aviation?

Pretty much, unless it's about the A-10 Warthog (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A-10_Thunderbolt_II) (the coolest plane ever made), Harrier Jump Jet (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harrier_Jump_Jet) or B-17 Flying Fortress (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flying_Fortress).

Frankly Tom Cruise ruined any chances of me ever liking fighter jets or Scientology.

I'm no military aviation expert by any means however a couple points.

1) F-22 Raptors are much more expensive than the SHs
2) Is the US even selling the Raptor?  Stands to reason that the US would like to be the only nation flying the most advance fighter around.  Though I guess they could sell a crippled version of it.

1) They are not that much more expensive if you exclude R&D costs. Which the aussies would not be paying for. Think about how much more effective the Raptor is over the Hornet?

2) Currently no it is not(not allowed) and it might never. However since the USAF are getting only 183 jets(for just under $70billion), there has been a lot of recent talk about selling the Raptor to Japan/South Korea/Israel/Australia. This would keep its production line open and therefore drop fly-away costs of the aircraft, giving the USAF the chance for more of their own F-22As.

Military aviation is not only Fast Jets 420. How about this:

The worlds largest aircraft. The Antonov An-225.

SR-71B, still 'offically' the fastest manned Jet aircraft in the world.

Proof that we will someday be aliens visiting other species planets and making them wonder if aliens are out there!

I really have no interest in what is best for Australia, I don't exactly live there.

Argh, I can't believe I forgot that one! My favorite right behind the warthog.

The only reason that other one is cool is because of the shuttle. Like the NASA version of a trophy wife.

A 747 can be retrofitted to carry the shuttle also.

Right there with you 420. The Warthog is the coolest. Saw one at the Pease Airforce base in Portsmouth New Hampshire which, I think, is where that footage of the Super Hornet was taken.

I also like big cargo planes C17s and big bombers B52s.  Something so big doesn't belong in the sky.

The Thunderbolt(Hog) is a boring aircraft in my opinion. Its just one big Avenger Gatling Gun.

Yep the Intrepid is there.  It's a museum now.  I didn't go on-board.  I saw from the streets.

Uh, that is the whole point of that plane's existence. It was built around that gun for no other reason than to make that weapon air born. Not to mention the fancy titanium tub that the pilot sits in or that fact that it can still fly after something like 40% of it's fuselage has been blown away.

lol damn. Would be some really major shit if it could take 60-80%.

Just note, I switched your image to a link, because it wasn't showing up. You can upload it or do something else with it to make it work if you want.

Exactly and thats whats boring about it. Its so obvious and therefore very limited when it comes to survivability. Its not Subtle like these three 4: F-22, B-2, F-117, F-35.

The B-2 looks like someone used glue and a hack-saw to put together all their left over plastic model parts.
