Title: Fallout 3 Information
Post by: 420 on May 08, 2007, 03:47:55 PM
This thread is for info concerning Bethesda's upcoming game, Fallout 3.

For those who don't know about Fallout, it is considered one of the best (if not the best) post-apocalyptic CRPG ever made! Black Isle originally created Fallout 1 & 2 using the Infinity Engine (same one used for Planescape: Torment, Icewind Dale series, Baldur's Gate series, Lionheart and Temple of Elemental Evil). In fact, Fallout 3 was in development when Black Isle/Interplay went out of business.

The official web site has some kind of teaser that is counting down the days to something!

If Bethesda is behind it, or even supporting it, it's bound to be good. Just watch out for bugs and shit. They've come out with alot of kick ass games that I like, but every single one of them have had some fucked up buggy shit.

May be nice if it goes to real time rather than turn based, though if that happens you won't be able to stratagize like before. All I really want are two things, a tough ass mangy cur as a companion, and .223 rifle modified down into a hand gun. Boooooooom!

Looking at the settings of the demo for the canceled Fallout 3 (Link (http://www.3dgamers.com/games/fallout3cancelled/downloads/)) it appears that you can choose turned based combat, real time or be asked which of the two modes at the beginning of each battle.

Keep in mind though that this may have very little, if any, impact on how Bethesda implements the combat system. No idea if they even plan to use the same engine.

WARNING! The canceled Fallout 3 "Demo" is super buggy so check it out at your own risk. I crashed at the start of the very first battle.

You mean and actual playable demo of the game? Wish I knew. It's due to be released soon so there ought to be one available soon.

You should watch some of the E3 trailers, or just the one with actual gameplay. But someone at IGN has a hardon for it, as it won IGNs best of E3 award in every place it possibly could.

It looks promising, ill at least rent it.

Check out the five gameplay demo videos (http://fallout.bethsoft.com/eng/downloads/videos.html) that Bethesda posted to YouTube. Sweet. The railroad spike gun (video 4) is my favorite so far but the lunch box mine has its charms.

Fallout 3 came out today and I've been playing it for the past few hours. It's a lot of fun and the starting history/tutorial is one of the most creative ways I've seen of beginning a FPS RPG.

Its so fucking nuts, all the stuff thats being released right now. There wasnt a game worth playing that was released in the last 4 months but all the sudden I have Rock Band 2, Little Big Planet, Dead Space and Fallout 3 and not enough time to try them all. But the big one is yet to come, Resistance 2 is just around the corner and its an auto-buy.

I got Fallout 3 too, its looks kinda like a post-apocalyptic oblivion fused with fallout, though like in oblivion all the faces look kinda dumb and despite all the char creation options you cant make it much better, at least you dont get to see your face often :p.

I only playd through the tutorial and a bit outside the vault, where some flamethrower ants pwned me cause i took melee skill instead of firearms >_< so guess ill have to switch to firearms for starting :0.

I chose the premade face 10 which looks just like Elvis and then I added massive mutton chops. I was really amazed by the level of customization you had with the faces though I didn't experiment with it too much.

As for the fire ants, I didn't encounter them until around level 4 when I was given a quest to clear them out. I'm an unarmed combat specialist (I beat a Super Mutant with a minigun to death with spiked gloves at level 3) but getting close to a fire ant is suicide. The trick is to get some frag mines and lead the ants into them. The mine will blow off their antennae which makes them go crazy and turn on their own kind.

I was just playing in window mode in these screens so yeah theyre kinda small but shows the point xD, the G.O.A.T. thingie waqs kinda funny aswell... " Ask your granny for a minigun instead, you dont want to miss after all".

If it's out or comes out for XBOX360 I'll probably play it eventually, when I get a new 360. (money's tight, gotta wait until my next paycheck at least.) But it definitely won't be on my instant list of games to buy, I have some I still need to play the shit out of yet, and more I want to get and play the shit out of yet.

Ooo, that can't be good for your karma.

SPOILER ALERT!
If you diffuse the bomb (explosive skill 25) you'll get a house, complete with robot butler, in Megaton that you can furnish with usable objects and "themes".

Here is a screenshot of the first "boss" I encountered, a Super Mutant Behemoth. As you can see, he was wielding some kind of lamp post with a fire hydrant attached to the end. I took him out with the "Fat Man" mini-nuke launcher.

Oh, if I buy that shit it's gonna be from Newegg. Amazon.com pisses me off. My bills are gonna suck up the entirety of the paycheck I just deposited two days ago, so like I said, I'll be waiting till my next one at least. Might even have to wait longer... assholes don't pay good enough for hard work, I shouldn't even bother to break a sweat anymore.

megatron
Is it "Megaton" or "Megatron?" Some of you put it one way, and others put it the other way. Is it like a place or a character? I've never played Fallout so I'm not following this too well. Isn't Megatron the robo-transformer dude from Transformers?

Yeah its actually Megaton, my bad.
Its just the first town you visit, well more like a junkie town, that just happens to have an atomic bomb in the center of it.

It's a town built right outside of Vault 101 (where your character comes from). The town is located in a crater that was made by a plane that crashed and the payload it was carrying, an atomic bomb, rests in the center of the crater. You can choose to try to disarm the bomb or rig it to explode.

The name "megaton" comes from the atomic bomb because we (still) measure the power of an atomic blast in megatons of TNT. (Which is a hopelessly outdated method of measuring explosions.)

What's outdated about measuring by amounts of equivalent TNT?  The energy released by blowing up TNT and by blowing up a nuclear weapon is the same as both can be measured in Joules, which is the energy expended by the force.

1 gram of TNT releases 4.184Ã?10^3 J.  As you can see measuring in Joules gives pretty big numbers that aren't easily read.
1 megaton of TNT releases 1 million million times more energy than that.  So it makes little sense to measure in Joules, as these number would just be ridiculous.  Even megajoules wouldn't be suitable.  In any case megaton is a much cooler word.

The largest nuclear weapon ever donated was the Tsar bomba (Russian), 50 megatons.  A bomb big enough to waste a large city pretty easy.

But we don't hold a candle to nature.

The earthquake that caused the 2004 Tsunami released 9,560 gigatons of TNT.  A couple thousand Tsar bombas.
The 6 mile wide asteroid that killed off the Dinosaurs released 100 teratones of TNT or 400 zettajoules (4Ã?10^23 joules).  Creating a 100 mile wide crater in the Gulf of Mexico.  Way more energy than all nuclear weapons combined.
Finally, a supernova releases 10^44 Joules or ten octillion megatons of TNT.  Eat that Fallout.
