It also allows servers to create their own dropdown lists of custom deities with custom restrictions. Most players don't even realize there is a deity field in NWN and that makes Father Phastus cry.
The Forgotten Realms campaign puts so much emphasis on deities I was surprised they didn't focus on it more in NWN. After all, in the Forgotten Realms, if you die without a patron deity your essence is added to the Wall of the Faithless surrounding the fortress of Kelemvor on the Fugue Plane. No one wants that to happen!
