Blizzard announced a new title at BlizzCon this week. Overwatch is a multiplayer FPS that looks like an anime cartoon.

Considering that this is their first attempt at a FPS game, I don't expect it to be that good, but maybe they'll pull it off.

Uh, Civ: Beyond Earth got boring. I couldn't keep playing. My understanding is that it is very different from Alpha. One of the lead devs says it's a "spiritual successor" to Alpha, but that's about the extent of it.

420- Have you ever heard of Pandora: First Contact? Seems to have a similar theme. It's on Steam.

Too bad. I love Alpha Centauri but the graphics really show its age. I will probably still get Beyond Earth once I finish a few of the games I'm currently playing.

I'll take a look at Pandora.

I actually watched the World Series this year. Weird. Nice that the panda made the winning catch too. Fans built a huge bonfire in the middle of the street down at San Francisco civic center (about 6 blocks from our apartment).

I never played Alpha Centauri.
It's on Good Old Games. It's the best incarnation of the Civilization game after Civ III in my opinion. If you get it make sure you get the Alien Crossfire expansion with it. (I think it comes bundled with the base game.) It's the title that Sid Meier did after Civ III when he left MicroProse to found FIRAXIS (or something like that).

Civilization: Beyond Earth
It looks like an updated version of Alpha Centauri. If so, I will definitely get this game.

Very nice but I think putting bacon inside of pork chops violates some kind of moral law. I'll flip through my bible and get back to you.

How long did you cook it? (I assume it was at 350 degrees.)

From the makers of Wasteland 2, another isometric RPG game based on Monte Cooke's game setting which is obviously an homage to Planescape: Torment.

Check out the Torment: Tides of Numenera Pre-alpha Gameplay Video.

I've tried that one on my wizard too but took it out since it does not work in archon mode which I use half of the time. Naturally this is because archon does not use resource.

Oh fuck! That's harsh.

At least you get some cool insight into Middle Earth.
Never read The Silmarillion? That's about all the insight I could handle.

Diablo III General / Legendary Gems
« on: October 06, 2014, 03:29:36 PM »
I decided to test out one of the Legendary Gems that dropped for me recently. These are new items added in a recent patch (2.1?) and can only be socketed into rings and amulets.

The one I decided to test was Taeguk Link

Quote
Gain 0.5% increased damage for 3 seconds after spending primary resource. This effect stacks up to 20 times.

Gain 0.5% increased Armor for every stack. (Requires Rank 25)

I tested it by removing an Imperial Topaz (+100 Intelligence) from my cold wizard.

Here are the results:

With Imperial Topaz: 519,898 damage

With Taeguk (0 charges): 512,970 damage

With Taeguk (3 charges): 520,665 damage

With Taeguk (20 charges): 564,268 damage

It's very easy to keep the stack at 20 during battle, especially with a wizard who's resources replenish so quickly.

Conclusion: Seems like this is going to work out just fine.

Somehow I missed this game being released. It's available on Steam for $39.99. (The digital deluxe version for $59.99 comes with a bunch crap that looks totally uninteresting.) Anyway, I will probably be getting this game after I complete a half dozen other games that I need to play first.

If you are a fan of Fallout 1&2 this looks like a game for you.

Borderlands 2 game of the year edition is now $10 on steam for a few more hours. I am downloading it now.
Let me know what you think and also you me and Throbble should get some multplayer going.

Goat Simulator was for sale on Steam for $5 last weekend. I read it could be played multiplayer so I bought a copy for Throbble and me but I can't find the multiplayer option.

Computer stuff / Re: Alienware Area-51
« on: September 21, 2014, 08:39:22 PM »
That doesn't remotely surprise me. My Dad works for a defense contractor, and he says they still have computers running Windows XP floating around. The problem is whenever they want to upgrade to a new system they have to make sure it's compatible with all of their security systems (and places like that tend to have very dense security systems and take a while to update).
My mom was the Y2K compliance officer for the Navel Postgraduate School in Monterey because she was the only one employed there would could still program in FORTRAN and COBAL. They begged her not to retire before she reprogrammed the mainframe so it wouldn't crash on certain dates. There are like 2 or 3 dozen dates past the year 2000 that could cause a system like that to crash. I was troubleshooting Zenith 248 PC's there in the 90's for fuck's sake!

Also, the paperwork you have to go through just to get any sort of new computer hardware or software is insane. Then there is the red tape (ie even after filling out the paperwork you get contacted by multiple people up the chain of command to justify the request). I knew people who just brought in their computers from home rather than deal with the ancient shit the government made them use.

Unless you work for NSA, CIA, SS, or the international equivalent you will NEVER own a rig that will not be at least partially obsolete in two years.
You have way too much faith in our government's equipment not sucking. I worked with the NSA and for the DoD and their computers were all horribly outdated. It was quite a shock actually. The best computers on base belonged to the virtual reality department.

That desk/case is awesome!

They aren't the most beautiful cases, but I'm otherwise pretty damn loyal to Lian Li.
Interesting variety of cases. What do you prefer?

The square one with the handle is interesting. Portable desktop! I can manage that.

Dunno about this particular case.  I like how it's a desktop.  I've moved away from towers myself and prefer everything up on desks.  But this Alienware looks like it would have bad airflow and this is a problem with all Alienware stuff.  Too much heat really reduces the lifetime of the system.  I don't see any fans on the outside of this thing (at a glance).
Hmm, the article link no longer works, but it mentioned that the case was designed specifically to maximize airflow and cooling by channeling hot air out through the most direct route. I had to buy an extra fan for my tower recently because it needed the extra fan (which did not come with the case) in order to make the angular airflow work.

Always, but the shape of the case was what I found most interesting about the article I linked. I wonder how long before Antec designs something similar.

Dell is making a new Alienware Area-51 gaming rig. It supports 3 graphics cards. Can you SLI more than 2 cards? The article says it can support 3 monitors but doesn't say that the graphics cards are SLI so I have no idea.

Anyway here is a pic of the new "triad" design and a link to the article:

Diablo III General / 2.1.0 Is Out and +100% Gold
« on: August 28, 2014, 01:33:50 PM »
The big patch is finally here and we got a +100% bonus gold drop. Not sure how long that will last.

Sony and Battle.net are experiencing a denial of service attack from some group of fucktards so there may be connection problems. I played yesterday and had no connection issues.

I only tried my primary Demon Hunter. The added timer on Preparation/Punishment is somewhat annoying and the change to Awareness passive made me switch to Blood Vengeance, which offset the timer on Preparation a bit by giving me more overall Hatred.

Oh, and we get another stash tab to cram with all the shit we should be parting anyway!

I'll post again once I've checked out all my characters.

Heard about that.  Hope everyone is ok!

Up in Napa some homes burned down because of broken gas lines. There were a bunch of minor injuries and a kid was in serious condition after the fireplace he was sleeping next to fell on him. As far as I know there was no damage and no injuries in the San Francisco bay area. Most of the people I've talked to slept right through it.
