THE RULE OF THREE
« on: September 10, 2004, 07:38:08 AM »
hey guys!
anyone who has been to smith hold will probably have noted that occasionally your combat box puts out the following
Quote
The Rule of Threes is in Effect
The Rule of Threes is in Effect
The Rule of Threes is in Effect

420 and throbble are only saying that its a secret for us to find out, and I'll tell you, it's really compicated. Even Cuchalann doesn't know it, and he's a DM there. What we know so far:
Quote
It has something to do mainly with the city center.
The Cistern holds much signifigance.
It is activated and deactivated in the same way.
It is likely activated by someone without knowing they activated it.
It weakens the "walls" between planes.(It makes it easier to pass through them, on purpose or not. EX Jack Sparrow may be found in Sigil Tavern(awesome place- always worth a visit)
Talking to Trappenwitz in the Cistern while it's activated will lead to more info.

Possible new leads:
Quote
It is possibly activated in the West side of the City Center.(Around the Bizaar. We think this because Mel[Tea-Cup] activated it last night[We are almost 100% positive of this; either she activated it, or 420 used the DM that was already logged on to activated it because he knew cuchalann and I were talking about it.] MEL PLEASE TELL US EXACTLY WHERE YOU WERE THEN AND WHAT YOU WERE DOING IF YOU CAN REMEMBER, PLEASE!)

Well that is all the info I have right now. I'll post more as I find it, and anyone who turns up new information please post it here.

Ok, I have done a little research and it turns out that it should be "The Rule of Threes" plural. Captain Jack Sparrow had it right all along (Throbblefoot's doing of course!) but the "world event" message that players recieved was incorrect.

Fixed now, and players should also get a message when The Rule of Threes is no longer in effect.

Throbbleserv will be up in a few hours, come on by, buy a pint and chat about the clan battle!

Part of the reason you never see ThrobbleServ is that we only bring it up a few times a week.

Likely times to find ThrobbleServ:
 - Tuesday 6PM - 4AM GMT
 - Friday 6PM - 4AM GMT
 - Sunday 12AM - 8AM GMT

Unlikely times to find ThrobbleServ:
 - Any time Throbblefoot is on GS!

However, if you see 420 or me on GS and want to take a peek at Smith Hold, we're usually happy to accomodate!

I have had some problems with people attacking the NPCs in Smith Hold, I am scripting up a rather nasty surprise for people who violently lash out at the kind Dwarves of this fine, upstanding city. Don't know how (though I have my suspicions), but some people have figured out how to kill "plot" NPCs.

Once I have remedied this problem I will run Throbbleserv, probably Monday.

Also, who is this "Taloneus2000" jerk, I have seen him on GodSpire and he had the generic dueling items in his inventory when he came to vist our server. Then he proceeded to attack the NPCs!

What a jerk!

Hee hee, I knew you were going to freak!

Ah well, you'll have plenty of chances to figure it out, after all, they only saw the result of the Rule of Threes, they don't know what activates/deactivates it.

Activating/deactivating the Rule of Three....

Well, this might be too obvious, but it might have something to do with the number three...

Does anyone else ever notice how there's always three of something... i.e. if you've ever gone to the kitchen, you'll see THREE giant figures which if memory serves me right, a giant, ogre, and golem.  Also, in the room that's real dark you see an Angel, a Devil and something else i can't remember.  Activating the Rule of Three might be that you see two things but there's a third component you need to fulfill...

Uh, "Sinderella" is not an angel, she is an "Erinyes", the Baatezu (Devil) version of a Succubus.

But, that is a very good line of reasoning, good job.

Oh sure... put the blame right back on me...  It's alright, it's my fault for not remembering it correctly.  It makes sense why she's named Sinderella and not Cinderella now.

And don't worry Celestial, be happy.  420 said "good job" for your line of reasoning  :D

i realize that :D

hypothesis #1
i think you might have to find a certain 3 statues that are opposites (good, neutral, bad type of thing) and use them in that order...

hypothesis #2
it could be the numbers of players on, or in an area...

hypothesis #3
also could be types of damage, items being used or equiped... or amount of an enchantment on armor.

theres a couple stuff for you guys to go on...

Yes I know... I have no idea why these random animals are carrying 148 gold and a magic fire ring. It will be forever a mystery![/span]

I agree with hypothesis number two...

It might be the certain number of players that are a multiple of three that activate the Rule of Three...

We'll have to get a group of three, excluding a DM, together and experiment

THE RULE OF THREE
« Reply #23 on: September 23, 2004, 01:23:20 AM »
Ok I was on for a few hours tonight while the rule of three was in effect. I took a look around and noticed the following:
1. While the rule of three was in effect there were only 2 groups of merchants in the bazzar, mindflayers and elves. Both of these groups were groups of three. and there were a total of three people logged onto the server, Throbblefoot (as DM), 420, and myself.
This makes 3 groups of three from what are random instances. Ie #of players on the server, and #of random merchants in the bazzar.
2. when the rule of three ended, the type of merchants in the bazzar had changed. Now there were The elves, and human merchants. The humans were a group of 2.
3. Throughout the course of the night the rule of threes did not occur again while i was on the server, and I did not note that Mindflayers and elves were in the bazar at the same time again. Other combinations did occur but the event did not trigger.
4. I also made note of he other merchant groups that came and went wihle the rule was not active   Red Wizards and Humans- groups of 2, Halflings- group of 4, and goblins- group of 5.

I am almost completly certain now that the mindflayer and elf merchants must be present for the event to trigger. But there may be another group of merchants that show up in threes that I did not record and may also be connected. So I'm pretty sure I have figured out how it works but I'll have to see it in action again before I know for certain.

Ah hah!  I knew it had something to do with the number of NPC's present.  It would appear we are getting one step closer to solving the Rule of Three...

Oooooo, 420 gave me a hint earlier tonight.  He said:

"It has something to do with the number three."

I know, I know.  I said that before but at least it's confirmed now.

NPC means "non-player character", so technically, NPCs aren't players.

This idea just dawned on me earlier... its probably wrong but

Hypothesis #4!!
It could be activated at 3:33 in some time-zone. If you're on and the rule of threes activates, remember the time. If the time happens to be at _:33 it could clue to the R.O.Ts.

Remember, this is probably totally wrong, but i figure i might as well post it.

(edit) Also note the day... it may add another clue.
