Good Movies!
« on: April 07, 2009, 06:53:41 PM »
Yo, I need you guys to give me the names of some good movies. Old and new, but mostly new preferred. I mainly want action, shit like One, Jackie Chan movies, Die Hard, xXx, Never Back Down, The Bourne (identity, supremacy, ultimatum), are some examples. Also comedies are good, but there are a lot of stupid ones that piss me off. I also really like many movies the following actors are in: Ashton Kutcher, Adam Sandler, Denzel Washington, Vin Diesel, Bruce Willis, Jackie Chan, Jason Stathom, Bruce Lee, Will Smith, Wesley Snipes, Edward Norton, Brad Pitt.

I could use some good suggestions, the actors and movies listed are just to give a good idea of the kind of movies I enjoy. Thanks in advance.

I won't even comment on your list of actors.

Here are some good action/adventure movies:

Seven Samurai (1954)

Remo Williams: The Adventure Begins (1985)

Big Trouble in Little China (1986)

Kung Fu Hustle (2004)

If there were any action films made more recently that were worth watching I would have listed them.

Ooo, wait, The Rock (Dwayne Johnson) did some good stuff in The Scorpion King.

And now I will comment on the actors listed:

Ashton Kutcher - Can't act, has Oedipal issues, most likely retarded or at least dull-normal

Adam Sandler -  Can't act, not funny, opera man

Denzel Washington - Wait, Malcolm X isn't an action hero, he just does that pointy thing with his hand

Vin Diesel -  Vehicle Identification Number Diesel? Are you serious?

Bruce Willis - Can't act, made a good a taxi driver (5th Element)

Jackie Chan - His early (ie non-American) stuff is the best, now he is just an old man

Jason Stathom - Wanna-be Michael Knight, next

Bruce Lee - Were you even born when he was still alive HeLL? The only one on your list I approve of.

Will Smith - Seriously, the Fresh Prince? Nah, I just don't see it. It's not just parents who don't understand.

Wesley Snipes - Uh... that guy from that home gym commercial? Do you think he and Chuck Norris have a thing going?

Edward Norton - I don't know what the Honeymooners have to do with action. Slapstick maybe.

Brad Pitt -  Not an action hero, but he was voted "sexiest man alive", what aren't you telling us HeLL?

Hey, 420, uhh... which movies did you say you starred in again? I forgot.

I didn't say they were all action movie actors. Any kind of movie with them in them has a good chance of me liking it.

I know I seen Big Trouble in Little China before, I don't remember what it was about but every time I see it playing on a channel I avoid it so I must've thought it sucked. Kung Fu Hustle sounds like it might be good. The rest are old as shit and I'd probably hate them.

NEXT!

On a side note, I just watched The Butterfly Effect 2 and 3 last night, after I learned there actually was a 2 and 3 just yesterday. They fucking sucked horse shit. What the fuck? The first one was a pretty decent movie... about 10,000,000,000,000 times better then the last two.

I watched Die Hard for the billionth time last week, watched the second one again not long after that, and the third one again today. Might as well re-watch the fourth one sometime soon.

Well I'll backup 420 on Kung Fu Hustle and Big Trouble in Little China. Both are excellent and are good for meeting both action and comedy requirements. As far as action films go, an action film is an action film. The most recent Bond films have delivered well, but I stick mostly to the 80's and 90's stuff. One rule out is my favorite action movie to date, Croutching Tiger Hidden Dragon. You better have seen that one already. Also I really like Death Proof friom the Grindhouse pair. It starts slow but the last half really makes up for it.

Every time I see a preview for a new comedy I have to make a fortitude save vs. infectious stupidity or die. my personal list of favorite comedies include:

A Fish Called Wanda
The Princess Bride (good action too and plenty of kissing)
This is Spinal Tap
Galaxy Quest
Monty Python (add any addtitonal title)
Noises Off
The Big Lebowski

Noises Off was a straight to video release, and is the absolutely most hysterical thing I have ever seen, ever. Seriously I was literally ROTFLMAO when I first saw it and still I need to stop it halfway just to catch my breath.

Now I have some reccomendations outside of your requested genres because they are just plain good.

Cool Hand Luke
Brazil
Twelve Monkeys
Fear and Loathing In Las Vegas
(From those last 3 any Terry Gilliam film)
Metropolis
Apcolypse Now
Barton Fink
Rear Window
One Less Car - SF Bicycle Coalition

Ooo, all good suggestions for action films!

And in that vein:

Beverly Hills Cop (1984)

Commando (1985)

The Golden Child (1986)

But you didn't make an "Arnold Schwarzenegger Quotes" thread, so you can see right there where you went wrong.

Brazil is great  and The Boys from Brazil
Any Akira Kurosawa (spellcheck that) movies
Hell, you'd probably like Virtuosity with Denzel Washington and  Russell Crowe before he became popular (my Delta Force sign on was Sid6.7!)
David Lynch and Stanley Kubrick movies
Wes Anderson

A nice documentary on philosophy I saw a few weeks ago: Examined Life
Waking Life
Spun has a great cast with Mickey Rourke The Wrestler was awesome and should have won more awards.
The new Bond movies
those actors suck but Bruce Willis
What about the Robocop series or Predator?

I saw Brazil for the first time recently (relatively), Cuchulann lent it to me. I really liked it and wished I had seen it when I was much younger, kind of like when I read One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest.

The first Predator rocked but the rest sucked. Though I haven't seen Alien vs. Predator but I got all the original Dark Horse comics and if it's anything like those it's gotta be good.
