New nVidia Driver FPS Slowdown
« on: January 25, 2008, 03:35:32 PM »
Version 169.21 Drivers (Win XP) are the first WHQL certified drivers that nVidia has released in years. While they do fix the problem the 1xx drivers had, where the NWN menu screen would just be a black screen, they introduced a new feature that destroys NWN's FPS for dual-processor machines.

The reason for this is that the drivers use something called "Threaded Optimization" to take advantage of dual-processor systems. This causes a conflict with NWN and bypasses the CPU Affinity option in nwnplayer.ini (which means setting that to 1 won't fix the problem).

In order to fix this "Threaded Optimization" should be set to off for the program nwmain.exe.

1. Right-Click on desktop and choose "NVIDIA control panel"

2. From the menu on the left select: 3D Settings -> Manage 3D settings

3. In the main window click on the "Program Settings" tab and scroll down to and select "Neverwinter Nights (nwmain.exe)" in the top window

4. In the bottom window scroll down to "Threaded optimization" and choose "off"

5. Click the "Apply" button

I went from 7 fps to 70 fps!
