Yep, DirectX 10 only works on Vista.

Windows 2000/XP both use the same drivermodel as Windows 95/98/Me. That's why older DirextX versions are "backwards compatible" and for example will work on Windows 98. Windows Vista uses another driver model and DirextX 10 is only developed to run on that driver model.

DirectX 5 and Windows 2000 were made when most gamers used Windows 98, so DirectX 5 was made to run on Windows 98. And for the sake of not reinvinting the wheel, Microsoft used big parts of the Windows 98 driverarchitecture for Windows 2000. The drivermodel used for WIndows 98 was developed for direct acces to the hardware. The Windows NT line didn't allow direct acces for securety reasons, so an extra layer between the driver and the hardware was created as solution in Windows 2000/XP. Something extra means slower speed and more problems. This model with layers can't keep up with the brute force of the new GPU's, so in Vista they changed it.

The following might explain the slower speed too:
Windows 2000/XP:
Direct3D app -> Direct3D runtime(encode) -> (decode)Kernel mode driver(encode) -> (decode)GPU -> screen
Windows Vista:
Direct3D app -> Direct3D runtime(encode) -> Kernel mode driver -> (decode)GPU -> screen

And ofcourse, a second reason and public secret: when DirectX 10 only works on Vista, Vista will sell better. Knowing Microsofts history, it's just normal that they like it this way.

Actually I think you have that backwards. The public secret is all that mumbojumbo about driver models.

As far as everyone is concerned DX10 is only in Vista for marketing reasons.

oke today i bought my new laptop

it's a ACER Aspire 5920G with intel core 2 duo, 2048mb ram, a GeForce 8600 GT 256mb ram (and i can add more using it from my main ram) 160gig hdd.

it's a pretty good pc unfortunately i can't get internet working on him i mean wtf...? i plug in my network cable and when i click on internet explorer i get the message can't connect to blablabla?

I suspect it's windows vista but dunno....?

Could be a million reasons.

open a command line and type ipconfig /all

what does it indicate under your local area network connection?

Does your router have dhcp enabled? Is your DNS configured correctly?

Did you just call your computer a him? Razor, I think you're becoming a little too attached to it... just set down the mouse and back away... just back away.

What exactly is the message you're getting? And make sure if you have a firewall on it to check it.

i had that problem and was because it came with all installed so i didnt install anything afterwards, but i had to install a lot of updates with a CD that comes with the laptop, then it worked.

first of all I don't have any routers i'm the only one in the house with a pc and who uses a pc so the pc is directly connected to the modem.

second of all my laptop doesn't have a firewall (well it had the windows firewall but i disabeled it)

third of all thanks for the advice Tyr i do have a cd with the laptop but didn't used it maybe that'll work...

If you're directly connected to the modem I'd HIGHLY[/u] recommend turning the Windows firewall back ON.

Unless you don't care about network worms and intrusions.

Oh by the way. Most modems don't like having new network cards plugged into them. Turn off your modem and computer for 10 mins then turn your modem back on and then turn your computer back on. I bet it will work.

If you have a DSL modem remember to configure the Internet Connection inside Windows.

I think you are right, now posting with my laptop internet works from the moment I installed the drivers of my usb network card and used the card....oh well guess i'll use it for now hehe

BTW Hell yeah I called it "him" cuz it's my precious now and i'll shoot anyone who comes close to HIM!

I tought let's update the drivers of my geforce and when i download the drivers from the nvidia site and when setup starts it says nvidia could not locate any drivers that are comptabible with your current hardware the setup program will now exit...?

so the drivers i downloaded for the geforce 8 series are not comptabible with my geforce 8600M GT card?

offcourse lol i just checked the hardwaremanager and it says
nvidia geforce 8600M GT

i'm kinda getting the feeling i'm installing it in the wrong folder but dunno...? it's c:\NVIDIA....

well I must say they do their job QUITE good I succesfully installed the new drivers on my geforce and run bioshock in fucking full high quality and it looks freaking great lol!

I've gone from a cable to modem no problem and then used a router with the modem and again no problem. You may need to setup a Windows network?

Could you take some screen shots of Vista? I'm curious.
