Well, when I was first introduced to the internet in 1992 emotes were just text, no smiley faces and they were considered "cute" like when girls dot their "i" with little hearts.

In fact, I made my own emote back then to make fun of emoters:

EDIT: Can't get the cig placed correctly because the fucking forum cuts out leading spaces and tabs (weak).
