We also know that every once in awhile Earth's magnetic poles switch but we have no idea when it will happen next or what affect it will have, other than rendering our compasses useless.

I just watched an interesting documentary about that.  I was also able to view the Aurora from where I live a few years ago. I must say it was very cool...and quite freaky.

I got to see it when I came up for the World's Fair in Vancouver. Stayed at someones house and I could see it from the window. Neat!
