--- Quote ---nothing to do with what can lay eggs.

"Therefore the first bird that evolved into what we would call a chicken, probably in prehistoric times, must have first existed as an embryo inside an egg."

--- End quote ---

this assumes that embryos were first in eggs, as opposed to being a part of the parent which becomes detached.
Simple bacteria exhibit this detachment process, as opposed to egg laying. Assuming all life stems from this primordial cell replication, it would be fair to say the chicken came first.

Soul Sojourner:
What came first the chicken or the egg? Evolution, that's how they got there in the first place. Unless you're all religious or something and would rather think it was a god. Then be my guest.

Oh yes there is. The question is "Which came first: the chicken or the egg?" It never says that it has to be a chicken egg in the situation, now if you want to be picky and say that the question is "Which came first: the chicken or the chicken's egg?" Then be my guest, but I'm not gunna care for it! :)
