I returned from here to find that my house caught fire. So now I'm kipping at my sister's place for the moment. Never should have left middle earth.

I decided it is time for a career change, and I have a three phase program for doing so.
Phase one, establish a new persona: Complete. I am Darth Phobos, Sith Lord.
Phase two, acquire loyal minions: Complete. Stormtroopers, basic, light, infantry. The any time any where meat shield.
Phase three, conquer galaxy: Commencing.

GaaaaaaawLEE! I knows that the Barry Bonds yeast extract diet would make mah legs all strong but I dinna think it would be like this! Being able to snap good hard metal in two just like that!
Seriously though this was one of the last few remaining original parts on my ride, which I purchased in October 1994, which means it had nearly 18 solid years of constant use and easily over 70K miles. It's sad to see such a stalwart thing go down but it did so in action. Sure surprised me when I had to stop short in the middle of the intersection to pick up the part and walk off. Ah well, even the best stuff doesn't last forever and that part was one of the best in 1994.
Well my faithful Artemis, (yes, that is what I call my bike) an entire new drive line will be yours soon.

Compared to what I've seen happen to some bikes (and bike riders) in San Francisco over the years, yours is some kind of blessed bike. Congrats! Time to celebrate with shiny new parts.

It's repair day. Here are a few pics.

First: Dirty old parts

Second: Shiny new parts

Third: Special tools needed for the job. Lft to Rt: A chain whip, crank puller, vise grips, that little black thing is a lock ring tool for the rear gear cassette, A big ol wrench for the lock ring tool, a chain breaker, and of course lubricant for the bike and the technician.

Fourth: A side by side look at the old crank set and the new one. Notice how the old one has a 5 bolt pattern to mount the chain rings while the new one has only 4. The 5 bolt type is now out of date and hard to get. If that had not been the case I could have only purchased new crank arms but alas it is not so. So I had to buy a whole new set and that means a new chain and rear cassette because my old ones would be worn in shape to the old rings. Mixing old a new gears like that causes your chain to skip often.

Fifth: Repairs underway.

Sixth: All done! Everything is in good order though I have to work with the placing of my front shifter a bit more until I dial it in just right. Other wise I'm back on the road!

Wow, those new pedals look like a drag compared to the old ones. I guess they won't scrape your leg as bad, but that's about it.

Alright now lets try for a third time to get some pics of Eagle River up. Ive been here since early June and I keep timing out when trying to post. It works! So here are some pics of the lake and the cabins where I am right now. And a 16 inch bass. They are not on catch and release now so that one made some nice fillets.
